Not everything coming from a legend instantly makes it also a legend. One of Indonesian Cinema Legend is Kwartet Jaya Group, a comedy group initially consisted of four comedians which all of them have passed away. Ateng Mata Keranjang was one of their movies, and headlined by only three of them, Ateng, Eddy Sud and Iskak while Bing Slamet was no longer with them. Ateng Mata Keranjang if being translated in English probably would be "Ateng the Playboy" although literally means Ateng Basket Eyes.
In this film, Ateng and Iskak are poor hard workers who get extra money from bringing people's goods from the bus when they arrive at "Aman" shoddy motel. Three unique guests arrive and stay at that motel. One of them is Drs. Eddy Sud who claims himself as an expert and advisor in any field. Eddy has a conflict with even more odd guests, the one that Eddy Sud refers to as Kacamata (in English: Spectacles/Glasses) and his assistant the Professor (Mang Udel). On their heating conflict Kacamata says that he is far richer than Eddy Sud since he has a map leading to an abandoned Japanese treasure which value as much as 200 million Rupiahs.
Ateng as the Playboy has a crush on a tough but pretty girl named Muti (Mutiara Sani) at the motel, but Muti who is with his father and sister named Vivi (Vivi Sumanti) at that time simply ignores Ateng. Ateng and Iskak then decide to steal the map from Kacamata, but having difficulty to understand the map, Ateng and Iskak hire Eddy Sud. The two parties then race their way to the treasure located among the hills.
So what's the playboy about? If you insist to know, then it's solely about Ateng who has a crush on Muti right from the beginning till they're looking for the treasure. The Title really doesn't relevant with the premise.
Kwartet Jaya Group (The Great Quartet) is a legend, but this comedy flick is far from being legend and even anything but entertaining. Where do I start to shred this movie? The directing is lackluster with camerawork that's also uninteresting. The pace is awfully slow with unnecessary scenes devoted only to shoot Muti doing her routine at the farm or scenes where Ateng, Iskak and Eddy Sud hiking the hills. The Cinematography? Whew....boring! It is shot in the hills, but the hills are just flat with tall grass and even eerily empty. The dialogue surely doesn't help the overall quality at all, with lines after lines that are just simply getting boring. The VCD quality is not helping our eyes and mind to (try to) enjoy the movie either.
But the biggest flaw is the jokes. Sigh....what is happening here? There is almost no laughing moment at all! Yes at all...I remember chuckling (a bit silent though) several times that I'm sure that it's not because the jokes are funny but because the funny figures of Ateng and Iskak. However seeing and hearing the jokes again for the second time or third time, I simply could not laugh anymore. Majority of the jokes are tried too hard to be funny and end up....not funny.
Ateng Mata Keranjang should not be watch by fellow moviegoers who haven't seen other great (read: really funny) movies from Kwartet Jaya, just to avoid any misjudging about this one of the oldest Indonesian comedy groups.
