Now... I really don't know what the heck happened in Lupus 3 production where almost all the actors and actresses and also the director from Lupus 1: Tangkaplah Daku Kau Kujitak (1987) and Lupus 2: Mahluk Manis Dalam Bis (1987) were replaced, thus making Lupus 3: Topi-Topi Centil (1989) a big bummer. But I do appreciate the consciousness to bring back all those involved in Lupus 1 and Lupus 2 to do Lupus 4! Whew... At last, the fans of Lupus (as I was) could rejoice over this big-hearted decision.
I also realized that the lead actor, the late Ryan Hidayat was quite busy over the year 1987-1989 as also with the director Achiel Nasrun with several movies that they starred and directed. But it sure was good to see them again.
Lupus (Ryan Hidayat) is not a teenager anymore, he's a young adult! This is commemorated after his graduation from Merah Putih high school, of course. Lupus and his buddies Boim (Agyl Shahriar) and Gusur (Doddy Priambodo) are celebrating their graduation in their own ways. Boim, who is a Betawinese, is being celebrated extravagantly in his neighbourhood by all of his neighbours for becoming "the educated one", while Gusur wallows in mud with his naive gramp in utmost cheerfulness. While Lupus himself has to be satisfied enough to go home and sees his mom (Tatiek Wardiono) and little sister named Lulu (Firdha Razak) are sad over their family financial problem, that Lupus' mom is forced to sell her late husband's stuff just to pay the rent.
Lupus is even more bummed to face the fact that he along with Boim and Gusur don't pass Supersemar (or admission test to college). But, the optimistic Lupus manages to regain his confidence and asks along Boim and Gusur to get a job instead. Getting a job in a big city like Jakarta turns out to be a big challenge for these boys, so Lupus resorts to his friend, Retno, in the publishing company where Lupus works as part-time writer or intern.
Lupus then offers Retno to make an article about the young people lifestyle from a different point of view. On his mission, Lupus manages to hook up with a dish named Phia (Paramitha Rusady), which at first looked a bit shallow. However, after they get to know each other better, Lupus finds a different side of Phia who is really nothing but a sad and lonely girl.

After considering that he has enough material to make a good article, Lupus publishes it but unbeknownst to Phia. Phia, who is later confronted by her friends who protest her for thinking that she sold her friends' story to Lupus, is shocked to know that she has been used by Lupus solely for the purpose of writing an article.
The next morning Phia angrily drives to Lupus' home demanding explanation for what he has done. The sway Lupus finally could calm Phia down, moreover Lulu is celebrating her birthday with her close friend named Dilla (the late famous Indonesian singer Nike Ardilla), who turns out to be Phia's little sister. Dilla brings good news about their father (Zaenal Abidin), upon hearing this, Phia could take all this experience as something worthy.

Tutty Fruity Love Story which is not as sugary as even a cheap candy. Yes, I'm very sorry to say (and very sorry myself) that Lupus 4 could not pull out what Lupus 1 and Lupus 2 had achieved. Half-baked storyline and execution, I must say. This motion picture is also based on Hilman Hariwijaya's novel, which I still had it in a good shape as one of my precious collections. But aside that the novel is also not my favorite ones among all of Hilman's novels, still I find reading the book to be more interesting than the movie itself.
Ryan's acting was over-the-top and somehow he lost his touch for being the fun Lupus, or is it maybe the script that's dull? All I know is that it's like some kind of cheap soap opera show. There isn't any chemistry between Paramitha and Ryan, at least not as romantic as Nurul Arifin and Ryan in Lupus 1. And the jokes are weak, very weak, that it could only make you smile.
But at least aside all of those flaws mentioned above, Nike Ardilla contributes her lovely voice. And of course, again, it's good to see the old cast and crew back in Lupus.
