One thing very unique about Warkop comedy group is the title of its movies. They're catchy and represent each colloquial term. From their very first movie, Mana Tahan (1979), and their first film that's directed by Arizal, Pintar Pintar Bodoh (1980), to Maju Kena Mundur Kena (1983), Depan Bisa Belakang Bisa (1987), it could be said that from their numerous films only one or two which use normal (read: less unique) title.
Dono, Kasino and Indro are seen deep in the forest hunting for animals, they're bragging about their weapons and then shoot a monkey up in the tree, but instead of getting what they want, two ugly gorillas suddenly appear and chase them. Dono is left behind and forced to do Russian roulette with a gorilla. Dono, eventually faints and had to be carried to the nearest village where Dono has a crush on the pretty local girl named Meti (Dian Nitami), their love adventure brings misfortune to Dono that he, again, had to be carried to a hospital where Dono continues his love adventure with the hot nurse Susi (Eva Arnaz). Meanwhile Kasino and Indro are busting their asses to find money to pay for Dono's medical treatment. Alas! Kasino and Indro who works as traveling photographer and make-up salesman meet a mentally-ill girl who threatens to stab them with a knife if they don't co-operate with her and so that girl takes Kasino and Indro to ride along with her escaping from her Mom and her Doctor who follows them with Bajaj. Wacky enough eh? :-)
Kasino and Indro later are given a simple job by their friend to interview someone at Istana Anggrek (Orchid Palace) hotel. It turns out that the interviewee is the same girl that Dono is dating at the hospital, nurse Susi. Of course Indro and Dono compete against each other to win her heart, where Dono and Kasino even have to disguise themselves as un-pretty transsexual (they still look like men) or what I used to call it as "Banser or Banci Serem or freakin' scary-looking transsexual". With their climax rivalry taking place in Dunia Fantasi Taman Impian Jaya Ancol in North Jakarta.
Back then this was one of my favourite Warkop movies which Betamax Video I used to rent along with another entry from Warkop movies in the 80s. Not because I didn't have other choice, but because it's sincerely funny and wacky. Dono, Kasino and Indro are not slackers but their adventure in ABBB is a wacky laughing stock for the whole running length. Okay, probably not every scene that will burst you into laughter, however for its clear silver lining in the storyline with enjoyable pace, the jokes are not just merely funny but also entertaining.
The title in case you're wondering what is it about, refers to a scene where Dono is about to get an injection and one of the nurse (and in later scene, a crazy guy) tells him that he could be injected either on his upper part of his body or the lower one.
Kasino with his Balinese accent provides different atmosphere to the film. It's not surprising, recalling his performance before while being a comedian on the radio which he used to fake his accent into any known dialect in Indonesia, from Padangese, Tionghoa and of course Javanese. Concerning the jokes, there are absolutely raunchy scenes, but they don't overshadow the story. Such as a scene where Dono is running naked (actually wearing skin-colour/transparent briefs) being chased by a crazy guy who wants to inject him. Dono or Wahjoe Sardono is the star of this movie, his facial expression is really funny and he's just giving all his got for his performance. Indro as the only member who is still alive until today in this film doesn't give any memorable performance. He serves only as sidekick this time.
As it is common with previous other Warkop's films where there is at least one musical scene, ABBB also contains several singing scenes where Dono, Kasino, Indro and Susi are participating in Rock 'n Roll festival. ABBB's finale scene is also a very exciting and interesting musical scene taking place at the fantasy land (Dunia Fantasi). However, different from other movies where the sing finale takes place in a more private place like Hotel's stage or Discotheque, this time it employs bigger place and a place which is one of Jakarta's fanciest and famous tourist attraction. Back then, the nearest Disney World could only be found in Japan.
Minor flaws do exist, like the Dunia Fantasi musical scene where it reminds me a lot of Olivia Newton John and John Travolta in Grease (1978). Or the not-on-time camerawork where we could see a second or two of the actors catching breath or waiting for a cue before the director says "action". Or the absolutely cheesy gorilla suit. Those, however, don't affect the overall entertainment-quality at all.
Everything is enjoyable! Especially the musical score and soundtrack that are really catchy, like the original soundtrack of the Dunia Fantasi, those of you who have visited it would get a memory-struck in an instant upon hearing that song. And the ending song that are really hip with the disco tune and good lyrics. The campy and not-well-trained dancing moves of Dono, Kasino and Indro (not the real professional dancers) are not flaws, instead they make the overall atmosphere seem more natural, genuine and sincere.
ABBB even though released in 1987, its entertainment quality could definitely outshine most Warkop movies, especially the ones released in the 90s. Moreover, despite I've watched this for so many times, the jokes still could make me laugh. One of the most importing is, it's very clear that the supporting cast and extras really enjoy playing in the movie by looking at their sincere laughs and eyes.
Honestly, there is this touching feeling seeing the already late Dono and Kasino singing and walking together in harmony and sheer joy. Well, this is a classic indeed. Warkop fans or not, ABBB is a valuable movie to watch or even to own... Dunia Fantasi! Here I come!!!
