Bebas Aturan Main or in English would be "No Rules" is arguably one of few Warkop's movies which title really reflects the overall theme and premise of the whole running length. And although it may sounds good but "No Rules" actually means intolerable and incoherent mess!
I really do want to tell you about the storyline, but it's hard to find any... And If I were forced to tell you one, then it would go like this... Dono (Dono), Kasino (Kasino), and Indro (Indro) are living luxuriously with their beautiful girlfriends whom they met at a Beach Queen contest. The three girls are (presumably) siblings who live under the same roof owned by their father Mr. Leo (Pietrajaya Burnama). Mr. Leo is the man whose pants are stolen by Dono, Kasino and Indro when they also lost their pants to a band of thieves down by the beach. Coping with unlucky coincidence, Dono disguises himself as Michael Jackson statue to be sent as a gift for Mr. Leo, so Dono could discreetly infiltrate the house and play pranks on Mr. Leo.
Believe it or not, that seemingly-quite-clear storyline only exists in the second half of the movie. So the first one we only see three men flirting and playing pranks on people with no purpose at all and with jokes that excessively abundant but not funny. Not funny at all. And this doesn't mean that the second half is better, it's even weirder with girls wearing bikini singing, dancing, walking while Dono, Kasino and Indro playing pranks again on people by the beach.
Okay, okay, if I was actually forced to laugh, there was only one moment where I at least could force a chuckle. If I wasn't forced by anything, I'll say this is one of the unfunniest Indonesian comedy flicks ever! The acting and the jokes are total awful. At a scene where the guys are thrown into the water by their crashing jeep, it is so obvious that they are actually jump from a safe place instead of actually being thrown, and I don't mean that they should hurt themselves while doing it but at least they should have tried something more believable than that or use safe throwing-machine. And we could easily tell when the time is where the director says "Action", and this time-flaw is an absolute interest-killer.
Ironically one thing that compensate for this film's mess is the acting of the supporting cast and not the main members. Supporting actors such as Pak Tile (as Tile, Mr. Leo's home security officer) and Bo Abo (as Inem, Mr. Leo's funky housemaid) and of course Pietrajaya Himself, an actor and also a director who had directed the first famous comedy group in Indonesia back in the 70s, the Kwartet Jaya group (Bing Slamet and friends).
Bebas Aturan Main makes clear why there are rules in this world. The only good thing about the movie is probably that all actors and actresses look so relax acting in Bebas Aturan Main, thus bringing light atmosphere into the overall tone and that's the only reason why this movie skips the zero star.
