By the year 1987, Warkop had already become so famous and the guys from Warkop had played with so many actors and actresses that some of them have become prominent actors/actresses in the Indonesian movie realm. Let me list it a bit, they're Eva Arnaz, Itje Trisnawati, Minati Atmanegara and her sister Chintami Atmanegara, Dian Nitami, Mat Solar, Ira Wibowo, Lia Warokka and Lydia Kandou among many others. This time however, Warkop hired, again, Eva Arnaz and man she's still sexy as before and probably more.

Depan Bisa Belakang Bisa, however, in my opinion is the upgrade version of Pintar Pintar Bodoh. In Pintar Pintar Bodoh, Dono and his friends star also as Private Investigators, but even though the premise is good, the result was awful. So probably in DBBB they tried to make a better one. And gladly...They did. DBBB was much better than Pin Pin Bo. DBBB was released in 1987, which means after more than a dozen of other Warkop films, while Pintar Pintar Bodoh is Warkop's 4th film, so one can assume surely that there're definite improvements.

The story is about Dono, Kasino and Indro that after failing miserably to become great actors, they form a private investigator company called Depan Bisa Belakang Bisa (dirtily translated as sexually active both ways or AC/DC or as Kasino puts it "Front Ok, Back Ok"). Dono roles as Dono the Agent Bolong Bolong 7 (or Hole Hole 7 or 007), Kasino as Kasino the Agent Sherlock Holmes and Indro as Agent Hunter from Cikampek (a city in West java). They then also hire a foreign secretary named Miss Penny (Not James Bond's Miss Moneypenny), Kasino later insinuates that hiring Bule (foreigner) regardless of their real administration ability is important to raise the company's credibility. Their first job would be protecting the jewelry exhibition held by a Japanese company owned by the sleazy Mr. Satomata, however, the Jewelries are eventually lost along with the model who wears it at that time, Michiko (Eva Arnaz). Strange thing is, Satomata forgives Kasino's careless job and hires Kasino again to protect Michiko from kidnappers. An agent from DKBK insurance company named Mr. Hengki (HIM Damsyik) also hires Kasino based on his suspicion on the real truth about the missing jewelries.

Picking up theme that's a hype in Indonesia was one of Warkop's great ideas, since Indonesian people watched some popular private investigators-related theme in the TV-series. And back then in Indonesia there were no private TV networks and so viewers were craving for more entertainment. DBBB was actually some kind of parody of those TV-shows like Hunter or Chips and also loosely (or tightly?) inspired by some notable movies like James Bond series. Warkop however put on some heavy dose of jokes in this "crime" movie. The jokes won't make you laugh till your stomach hurts (okay, probably there are 2 or 3 scenes) but the jokes might induce some chuckles being sprinkled evenly throughout the whole running length. In the end though, there is one wacky scene where Dono turns into Gaban, a fictional sci-fi hero from Japanese TV-series for kids. Even though this scene is no laughing stock, but it's entertaining to watch Dono (or whoever behind the mask) does some wacky action moves.

Watching Depan Bisa Belakang Bisa would be more interesting if you have already watched James Bond's movie that was released also in the same year as DBBB, The Living Daylights, the first James Bond movie to be played by Timothy Dalton. If you haven't, well…DBBB won't amuse you greatly, since it’s crammed with too many stories, speaking frankly, it turns to be a bit of a mess...But still this entry of Warkop is quite entertaining.
