At the 80s this movie was arguably a blast, I could tell it because I could hardly get its video to rent at the video rental store near my house. And I remember saving my money (which I finally asked for a little support from my parents) to buy the Betamax video of Kesempatan Dalam Kesempitan.
The storyline is basically almost none, but that does not matter if the overall entertainment quality satisfies the audience. In essence the story is about how Dono and his friends try to cope with their problem by helping each other. Dono, Kasino and Indro befriend Shanti (Lia Warokka) and Tina (Lydia Kandou). Each of the guys has their own problem at hands. I would start first from Indro, Indro is fired from his job and getting evicted from his house, and so he moves to Shanti and Tina's house, trouble comes when Shanti's mother visits her daughter and really hates to see an unmarried couple living together (kumpul kebo jack!). So, to avoid Shanti's mom thinking negatively of her daughter, Indro had to play cat and mouse with her. Dono also has his own problem which is dealing with his envious and oppressive supervisor Mr. Joseph, the girls and Kasino try to trick Joseph on Dono's behalf. The worst problem however is faced by Kasino. Working as a dishonest car salesman, a man named Anton Killer demands refund money from the now-broke-again Kasino. Panic, Kasino asks for a week time to collect the money, but being declined and threatened by Anton, and then Dono tries to be the hero by defending Kasino which eventually leads Anton to challenge Dono in a duel on the boxing ring. Dono boastfully accepts the challenge, not knowing that Anton was actually a three-time amateur boxing champion.
Funny in both ways, what ways? First of the scripted jokes where all lines of dialogues were clearly written. But second, the unintentionally funny moments are also hilarious! such as the scene where Kasino bumps his head on a horse but then keeps on running while being chased by an angry old lady who chases him while lifting her Batik skirt. Another example is when Dono and Indro are practicing boxing using their once-very-popular-back-in-the-80s boxing dolls. Dono viciously breaks Indro’s Doll, not a laughter but a smile guaranteed.
The storyline may not be complicated or intricate, but seeing young people try to deal with their problems by helping each other is already a good premise and for that premise being wrapped in comedy surely a good sign. From the scene where Dono is waiting for a cab and meets a strange girl, at the beach where the guys are playing a song, to the big finale where Dono is fighting Anton at the boxing ring. Usually putting so many different elements into one would end up as a mess, but the filmmakers could escape that, so we as the audience would not feel such a cluttering mess, instead simply an array of jokes derived from many instances, and that's the most important thing that makes Kesempatan Dalam Kesempitan as a good comedy film.
