First ever big screen movie of Warkop DKI that gives us the chance to see how they acted for the first time as professional actors! Produced in 1979, it features Rahayu Effendi and also dangdut singer Elvie Sukaesih.
The movie begins with a scene in a remote railway station at Purbolinggo, a small city in central java where Indro meets Dono for the very first time on their journey to Jakarta. Very soon, they get to know each other quite well. Arriving at Gambir Railway Station in Jakarta, they take a cab to take them into a boarding house but mistakenly taken into a brothel, and when they finally arrive at a real boarding house, the problem is just about to begin. Just so you know, in this film all actors use screen names, which is very different with Warkop future films.
Indro as Paijo, Dono as Slamet, Kasino as Sanwani B.A. (stands for Betawi Asli—Pure Betawinese) and Nanu as Poltak. The four boys compete each other to gain the attention of the hot housemaid Halimah (Elvie Sukaesih) from merely teasing her to peeping her taken a bath. With their own financial problems, Paijo and his friends have to earn money by other means than just waiting for their parents to wire them. Slamet work as a photographer, Paijo as a taxi driver, Sanwani and Poltak work as a team of street musicians.
Friendship lasts forever
On the level with you all, this movie is more like a drama than a comedy, if there were jokes, they were not funny, and they were rude and tasteless. The biggest downside is from Rahayu who overacts things.
On the other hand, if you're willing to simply ignore the presence of jokes, Mana Tahan is filled with musical scenes which relatively way more than other Warkop's entries. The songs are great treats for the ears of its audiences, with 5 songs total that are sung by Elvie and the boys, like the ever famous "Andeca Andeci", the catchy lyrics of "Mustafa", or the theme song of this movie "Mana Tahan" which I personally think as one genuinely fun song! The other two would be "Gengsi" and "Jangan oh Jangan".
The video quality is fair but there is a scene where red dominates the entire view.
I know that probably most of fellow moviegoers expect laughter from Warkop's movie, but this legendary movie of Warkop that falls to Drama Musical genre is one precious piece of musical film and Not a precious piece of comedy flick...
Mana Tahan is, with no doubt, a must for the collectors of Warkop Movies, or for those of you who do appreciate classic Indonesian movies.
