The Movie Review
June 14th 2011, 15 hundred hour Indonesian Western Time. And I'm watching "Coming Soon" trailers of 13 (2010), Trust (2010), and Pacar Hantu Perawan (2011) (hmm that means virgin ghost lover). Anyhow, that day I decided to pay a visit to a cinema of 21 Cinema Chain near Blok M Bus Station, South Jakarta, and since I have written movie reviews with serious theme like Ironclad (2011), Johnny Mad Dog (2008), 88 Minutes (2007) and Hati Merdeka (2011) which makes my head pretty much buzzing, then I might as well relax seeing this another attempt of Sex Horror movie by Indonesian filmmaker, Koya Pagayo.
Indonesian B-Movie horror called Pelet Kuntilanak or loosely translated as Love Voodoo of Female Ghost. Released on June 1st, it's just another horror movie featuring the so-so-even-awful story which allegedly based on True Story. And

as usual this movie features mixed bag acting, simple script, sloppy editing, but does have solid fan base because at least it's once again filled with sexy Indonesian babes wearing minimum clothing namely Debby Ayu and Cinta Dewi.
Pelet Kuntilanak opens with a college guy named Bobby is road kill and die heavily bleeding after seeing an apparition of a scary looking female ghost with long black hair known better in Indonesia as Kuntilanak. This is the 3rd guy who died gruesomely. Apparently these three deaths are linked as we hear that some college students suspect that all these three guys had dated Pamela/Mela (Debby Ayu) before they died.
Afterwards, still there is a man who wants to date Mela. He is a horny guy named Daniel who's considered as a total jerk by Pamela for deflowering a girl then left her just like that. Mela then tells Daniel to go commando and to hand over his underpants to her as a prerequisite if he wants to date her, but in that super dirty college bathroom, his hand is grabbed by Kuntilanak. Whow! What will happen? NOTHING! That's just that, no scene of that guy hands over his undies to Mela! Ridiculous.
Anyhow, Mela's friends, Vega (Angie Yulia) and Tantri (Cinta Dewi) start to link the 3 deaths with Mela but Mela jokingly and arrogantly just says her principle is to collect as many sins as possible and then make atonement later, and if she ends up in hell then she will enjoy that hell. Apparently Mela is using black magic with the underpants as the medium. But something is not quite right with the devil deal.
Meanwhile, Tantri is facing her own misery. Being a virgin and refuses the moves of perverts in her campus, Tantri is suddenly kidnapped while strolling alone at night and then taken to an old creepy house by three "unconvincingly-drunk" men, Jay, Kevin, and Rudi. Kevin and Rudi then continue to brutally rape her (cue for a shot of nice black panties en bra). Actually, Jay tries to stop them but only to be knocked unconscious by Kevin and Rudi. Afterwards, Jay hurriedly asking Vega's help to retrieve Tantri who lies battered and bruised. Sad, depressed and confused, Tantri is thirsting for revenge. So with Pamela, she goes to Black Magic practitioner (Dukun Pelet and/or Santet) to ask for the same Love Voodoo like the one that Pamela possesses. So after Dukun Pelet sniffing Tantri's panties, he gives the black magic which empowers Tantri to do sadistic stuff to her rapists.
Pamela is feeling more enthusiastic with Tantri's companionship in this satanic worshipping, but she doesn't realize that Mrs. Badyo ---whose husband named Prasetyo is having sex affair with Pamela--- is visiting a different dukun santet to make Pamela dead. And Tantri is now enjoying her new abilities to impose terror and creepy magical stuff to the evil guys. They are constantly terrorized by Kuntilanak, and experiencing horrible stuff like uncontrollable movement of their body and blowing chunks of nails, strands of hair, blood and razor blade rights out of their mouth... Saucy eih?
But Kuntilanak is getting out of control and terrorizing even Mela and Tantri and even also the innocent Vega. What will happen to those who "play with fire"?
But by the way guys... What exactly is Pelet Celana Dalam? Well, for starter, Pelet Celana Dalam is actually the real and original title of the movie before got disapproved by LSF (Film Censorship). In Indonesian that translates as Underpants Love Voodoo... (I can't believe I wrote that :-)). There is a subplot involving a young director (who's making a movie titled Pelet Celana Dalam) named Edwin providing the explanation/background story of which this horror film is based on. You see, this horror film is said to be based on true story (seriously not a weird stuff for Indonesians). A true story which happens 15 years ago where a woman got killed, thrown to an old well and burnt! She was using Pelet Celana Dalam as well, so said Edwin.
Pelet Kuntilanak aka Pelet Celana Dalam, once again, delivers the sickening mixed bag acting, gory deaths and black magic stuff. We got a man slashing his own throat, a man got his throat stabbed by stick, bloody face of road kill victim, some characters puke up hair, nails, razor and blood, a man is tied up in a chair with blood all over him and then face smashed by fire extinguisher. Disturbing image of ghost apparitions. And from the Sex side, we got Debby Ayu in provocative clothing, bathing scene of Tantri (Cinta Dewi), raping scene of Tantri, and not to forget we got to see Edwin and Mela sleep together only that Edwin sleeps fully clothed with jeans as well and Mela with tanktop and jeans shorts. How comfy...
But even so, there are some comedy elements sprinkled in the film. Responsible for making the audience (mostly teenagers) laugh is Vega's cousin with his low-brow jokes about sex and p*nis or when he says Chancut or Kancut a lot (Changcut or Kancut are slangs for Celana Dalam either for male or female).
Anyhow I sit on the uppermost row in the middle so I can observe the reaction of the audience, and I honestly say that I heard happy and genuine laughter on the jokes coming from the moviegoers that are mostly teenagers. And most of them are couple :-) I even saw in my row of seats, there were lovebirds at the most corner spot hehehe. So if this is your cup of coffee, then go to the Bioskop to enjoy this flick. But I've seen even better attempts of horror from Koya Pagayo than this mind-numbingly predictable Pelet Kuntilanak.
