Love and music are equally mystical, both of them could easily shake your emotion, bringing you up or down. In essence they are stunning and full of mystery. Those two words are what defining this Asian movie coming from Hong Kong and Taiwan, Secret or in its other title Bu neng shuo de. mi mi. Secret was Taiwanese musician Jay Chou's directorial debut, and I've gotta say he has a future as a director. Before I write further about Secret, just as the title suggests, this romantic film holds a big secret or twist that if revealed will screw everything up. And also a secret that may require you not to be too skeptic, so I will describe the plot a bit not too clear.
Secret tells the story of young man named Ye Xianglun (Jay Chou) who has just recently moved to a prominent school famous for its music major, Tam Kang. Ye Xianglun is also a very talented pianist and soon stuns his friends for his music skill and steals the heart of a girl from his class named Qing Yi (Kai-xuan Tseng). But as nice and attractive as Qing Yi is, Ye Xianglun, on the other hand, is so caught up with a girl who plays wonderful tunes in the music room, a lovely and cheerful student named Lu Xiaoyu (Kwai Lun-mei). Not for long, their admiration to each other grows to become more intimate relationship. Could they get along well until graduation day?
As music is an art, Secret is also an 'art'. It is wonderfully executed, nicely paced and is ornamented with classical music and the utilization of colours. Watching Secret isn't just watching a mere movie, or other musical movies filled with extravagant costumes and hip music, instead it was like watching a motioned work of art. Of course this credit should be given to the visual effects team for has provided more positive points to this drama, most notably for the scene in the old music room, that's very very nice.
But of course Visual Effects alone would be nothing without a solidly written storyline and the outstanding performances of Kwai Lun-mei and Kai-xuan Tseng. The combination of the characters and how those two actresses portray it are wonderful. They are not sassy and they are not cartoon-y cute, No! Their characters are of normal students but with sympathetic behavior. Kwai Lun-mei could make me feel how she holds a certain secret of her own and not totally being honest with Ye Xianglun, and the way she touches and stares, I strongly believe this actress has a bright future in romantic movies. And both characters, Lu Xiaoyu and Qing Yi genuinely are characters that we could feel emotionally attached to and root for.
Sadly, this movie is not without a flaw, which comes directly from the director's and also the writer of Secret, Jay Chou. If only Jay Chou had cast another actor who also excels in Piano instead of just giving the role to himself. Talking about distribution... Because as good as Jay Chou as musician, his performance is very wooden. He has no expression and really not a help to make this film livelier.
But then again its story, the choice of music, the cinematography and almost everything in Secret are captivating. And so I recommend for you at least to see it once. But honestly for a fantastically genuine romantic movie like this, I'll say, buy it!
