As I was strolling the halls of 21 Cineplex waiting for a movie to start, there were a couple of Indonesian horror movies displayed as "COMING SOON" and slated to be released in July. One of them is Pacar Hantu Perawan (2011), a movie scheduled to be released on 7 July 2011 and predicted to have solid fan base because of many things. But one thing is clear, this is another horror film featuring the well-known actress/singer/dancer/dangduters/everything-else-news-worthy Dewi Perssik. So I figured, once I got home, I would write a movie review of her first feature film, which is none other than the 2008 Tali Pocong Perawan.

Nino (Ramon Y. Tungka) is a lonely pervert who shares a roof with Aldo (Ibnu Jamil). When he's got horny, Aldo would climb up the ceiling to peep on Aldo making out with his girl, Virnie (Dewi Perssik). Nino and Aldo live together in a very large and luxurious house all alone with only Virnie who often comes to have some "fun time" with Aldo. In his desperation, Nino seeks advice from the internet on how to use black magic to earn the love of Virnie! It said that Nino should seek a newly dead virgin corpse to steal the rope of its clothes (Tali Pocong of Kain Kafan).

Feeling excited, Nino sneaks on a hospital to look for fresh corpses in the morgue but fails after Nino himself almost got inserted to the morgue chambers. Afterward Nino braces himself and drives to a big cemetery in the middle of the night. He plans to steal the rope of a girl who had committed suicide in their college. Oh, Nino does it alright... He digs and digs the new grave and successfully steals the Rope. Nino then carefully put the potion made out of the rope (Tali Pocong) to Virnie's drink but without him knowing, Virnie accidentally knocks down her drink. Which means Virnie is saved from Nino's evil scheme.

Nino then notices that Virnie is still in love with Aldo and even smooching and talking dirty right in front of his eyes. Thinking his plan has failed, Nino then goes outside the house to burn the rope. After he satiates his anger, to his utmost shock, Nino learns more from the internet that whoever destroys the rope in any means, the original corpse who owned the rope will seek revenge from him! Will Nino survive the terror? But why the ghost is also terrorizing Aldo and Virnie?

Tali Pocong Perawan is an effort of combining horror with sensuality-bordering-on porn. By the time of its release back in 2008, the movie created quite a ruckus for the daring performances of its lead actress --By Indonesian standard. We see Dewi Perssik and Dwi Putrantiwi in two-piece bikini, Dewi Perssik talks dirty with Ibnu Jamil, Naughty camerawork focusing on private parts of her body and one scene where Dwi Putrantiwi is bathing naked. Although the filmmakers try their best to conceal the nudity, but still the scene shows "some things"

By now, Tali Pocong Perawan can be considered as tame. Tame for its sensuality only. The horror scenes are actually effective for those who rarely see horror films. There are only 2 types of supernatural horror in Tali Pocong Perawan and with no gore. The first is the boo scares which are extremely annoying for me because of the LOUD DEAFENING sounds every time Pocong (the ghost) pops out! The second is smart horror such as ghostly apparitions on the lift which is clearly taken from an Asian horror movie The Eye (2002). And one scene even almost feels outrageously ridiculous when a character is chased by a horizontally-superman-like-flying pocong! Yeah baby, bring more of that super pocong on screen!!

But you don't have to be a super-fan of Dewi Perssik to enjoy Tali Pocong Perawan, though you should lower your expectations...
