The Movie Review

This is a daring Chinese remake of American film titled the same name (that means What Women Want (2000)). With Mel Gibson is replaced with the living legend Andy Lau and the living beauty Gong Li. Usually when it comes to Remakes, some moviegoers having fun scolding the Hollywood remakes of Asian movies but now, will they have the chance to do the opposite? Because could Andy Lau and Gong Li presents something different or at least on par with the original?

Sun Zi Gang (Andy Lau) is an advertising executive who is better in selling himself to women and female co-workers than selling advertisement to consumers. Every hot chick in his vicinity has got seduced in some ways by the infamous Sun Zi Gang. But his boss begs the differ of his skill when their company is facing difficulty in coming up with brand new ideas for brands. And so the company hires a well-known female creative director named Li Gong (Li Yi-Long), which they hope would give the company workers new insights on how to sell women's stuff.

To do this, the hot and sexy Li Yi-Long distribute each member of the advertising team, a pink box with various women's things in it. She wants to bring up their new sense of empathy towards women, which she call it as "Anima" Sun Zi Gang feels a certain degree of like, respect but also resentment of jealousy towards Li Yi-Long. Aside of having brainstuck and can not come up with something creative, Sun Zi Gang is having a hard time trying to bond with his teenage daughter. But in the name of Pride, Sun Zi Gang braves himself to wear bathrobe, stockings, high heels and even put on some lipstick just as to be more creative. But... he slips in the bathroom and got himself electrocuted.

Awoken in the hospital, Sun Zi Gang realizes there is something different around him. He can hear the innermost thoughts of any woman! Even of animals. What will he do with this superhuman gift? Will he bond with his daughter and try to successfully seduce Li Yi-Long or will he choose to wreck her career up?

Boring and pretentious. This is just a lame attempt on cashing in out of something very lovable. What Women Want (2000) was surprisingly funny, light, novel and in the end making the audience felt good. I tried to keep open-minded to any remake, because not every moviegoer has seen every original of every remake, right? And I'd watched Andy Lau in his early role as Yo Ko of The Return Of The Condor Heroes (1983), and I also admire the beauty and acting skill of Gong Li movies such as Memoirs of a Geisha (2005) or Curse of the Golden Flower (2006), but they being together in this movie spells MISCAST! Total miscast! With no chemistry, no romanticism and no emotion. Andy Lau is trying hard to be this womanizer, and though I've seen him in similar roles before, but appearing in this remake is a mistake. And Gong Li with her bedroom eyes is not suitable as the vigorous and creative female exec! And everyone (every female co-worker in the office) is trying too hard to look sensual, it ends up very fake.

The editing is abrupt and the comedy is hit and miss. Yes, I heard some laughter in the studio and I also had a few fun times myself, however, running for almost 2 hours for this wannabe film is just too darn long! Seriously mate, it's hard for me to stifle a yawn, made worse by the empty bucket of popcorn and the almost dry cup of coke. I won't recommend this to anyone who appreciates quality romantic comedy, actually it's a rare thing for me not to like a com-rom, but this time, it's too darn hard not to.
