» Madani Film Festival in
11th Jakarta International Film Festival 2009

[posted: Dec 6th 2009 02:31 pm]

11th Jakarta International Film Festival 2009 photo

Since the first time JIFFest was held, Islamic-themed films have always had their places in our line-ups. Islam remains one of the widely discussed subjects around the world, and films about Islam that come from both Islam-dominated countries and non-dominated ones continue to draw interests among our audiences. It was not until last year that we put up a special section on Islamic-themed films. This year, we are proud to introduce Madani Film Festival, a special film festival on films about Islam from around the world. The select international films in this festival are those that touch on the lives of Muslim around the world. The films will ideally expand and enhance general public knowledge on different sides of Muslim unlikely displayed or heard in other media. We believe that through films this issue will echo more in minds and hearts of the audiences. The festival, co-organized by Rumah Film (http://www.rumahfilm.org), is integrated as part of this year’s JIFFest programming selection. However, we plan to feature this as a separate festival next year, hoping that more audiences will discover different sides of Islamic lives worldwide. Have a good time in Madani Film Festival!

» Did Hollywood actors receive too much salaries?

Let's make a movie! Ok now, who's gonna be the director? Where are we going to shoot it? Do we have the script? How is it gonna end? Hey wait a minute! Who's gonna be the lead actor? Or actress? How about Mr. John Doe and Mrs. Jane Doe, alright let's spare our money to pay them well so that our movie would do excellent! WAIT! Hold that thought for a moment.... Forbes has listed 10 Hollywood actors that were overpaid! Whow... talking bout wasted money. Should producers be paying them less in the future? Here's the list:

For every $1 The actor/actress was paid, their movies earned as much (average) as:
  • 10th ) Jim Carrey: $8.62. Blame it on The Number 23

  • 8th ) Leonardo DiCaprio: $7.52. Blame it on Revolutionary Road and Body of Lies
  • 7th ) Drew Barrymore: $7.43. Blame it on Lucky You.
  • 6th ) Tom Cruise: $7.18. Blame it on his latest movies
  • 5th ) Ice Cube: $4.77. Blame it on The Longshots

» Evan Chandler is dead

[posted: Nov 23rd 2009 09:02 pm]

Fans of Michael Jackson's This is it might want to know this... Evan Chandler is dead.

But who is Evan Chandler...?

Back in the year 1993, there was an incident or a case that yanked Michael Jackson's popularity down to almost none. And I don't mean that he couldn't sing or dance anymore, but the kind of allegation that degraded him as one of the most hated villains in the world, a pedophile. Poor Michael Jackson, he was accused to had abused a 13-year old boy named Jordy who's no other than Evan Chandler's son, and Evan eventually managed to extract as much as 22 million dollars out of Michael with a signed contract that Jordy would never talk about the scary allegations.

Afterwards Evan, who was a former Beverly Hills dentist, used most of his money to undergo some weird cosmetic surgery operations. And in 1996, Jordy claimed that he'd been attacked by Evan with dumbbells. Quite strange enough, in that very same year, Evan sued Michael for an increasing amount as much as $60 million, claiming that Michael and Lisa Marie Presely (Michael's then-wife) had breached the contract by talking about the case. jacko as a kid photo

On November 5th 2009, Evan Chandler was found dead on his bed at his Jersey City apartment in New Jersey. Evan died with a gun on his hand and with a single bullet wound on the side of his head. A police source stated: "We have ruled it as suicide because he was found with a gun held to his body. He had a single bullet wound to the side of his head. There was no note but officers did find medication in keeping with a serious medical condition."

After all said and done, it's not a difficult thing to remember Michael's song: Heal the world, make it better place, for you and for me and the entire human race…

» 2012 brought death in Indonesia

[posted: Nov 20th 2009 11:36 pm]

2012 Victim
Roland Emmerich's movie, 2012, is the biggest movie show on earth nowadays. I'm sure most of you have seen the movie, with or without much effort. As for Indonesian moviegoers particularly, you've gotta put more effort and wait in line to get the ticket. Even on work days, most cinemas were fully booked until midnight. The managers of those cinemas were not just standing there doing akimbo, they're trying to make it easier for fellow moviegoers (and also earn more profit of course) even by opening multiple studios exclusively just for 2012. Is the movie any good? One thing for sure, Roland Emmerich's 2012 is a phenomena of itself.

Sadly.... this phenomenon brought a real un-fictional disaster to a man in Indonesia. From the information that I gathered yesterday (Nov 19) on one of private TV stations, a man who lived in Balikpapan Tengah, Kalimantan Timur (East Borneo), has committed suicide because of 2012 phenomena. This 56-year old man, by the name of Kwee Iswadi, was allegedly panicked over his own imagination of 2012 catastrophe and which is worsened by his personal health condition. Kwee committed suicide exactly at 01:15 PM in a 5-star hotel by jumping from the roof of this 8-storey building. In just a matter of seconds guests and people on the street were rushing to the scene to help the man, but Kwee had already lied helplessly on the parking lot.

The TV station seemingly didn't confirm if Kwee's decision had anything to do specifically with Roland's movie, 2012, nevertheless Indonesian moviegoers must've realized that 2012 has spread to be over-exposed. Even gossip shows (infotainments) that usually only cover about celebrities' activities, now also cover 2012. It's also stirring up controversy in several cities in Indonesia. 2012 movie phenomenon in Indonesia arguably might remind us how people stormed in the cinemas to see Ayat-Ayat Cinta (Verses of Love) or Laskar Pelangi (The Rainbow Troops), both in 2008. Or probably Titanic back in 1997. Roland Emmerich himself, is not a newbie to a disaster and/or grand-scale movie, he has directed Independence Day (1996), Godzilla (1998), The Day After Tomorrow (2004) and 10,000 BC (2008). Besides... 2012 is not the only movie covering 2012, there's already one independent movie in 2008 (a direct-to-video) called 2012: Doomsday which successfully put me to sleep. I'm sure this movie will never stir up controversy. Anyways, what I'm trying to say is 2012 is NOT the first disaster movie ever and I'm pretty freakin' sure it's NOT going to be the last one. Probably the movie should borrow the tagline from Wes Craven's The Last House on the Left (1972): To avoid fainting, keep repeating "It's only a movie...It's only a movie..."

My sincerest condolences to the family of the late Mr. Kwee.

» Kristen Stewart's New Moon versus Miley Cyrus

[posted: Nov 20th 2009 04:02 am]

Kristen Stewart photo
Everybody is on the hype over New Moon these days, wherever I go, there are only 3 subjects coming to my ears, it's either New Moon, Michael Jackson's This is it or Roland Emmerich's 2012. But I heard New Moon slightly more since people around me were never tired talking about either the novel or the movie. What about you? Are you one of the fans who set a camp just to see the cast on New Moon's opening night? Or are you simply indifferent?

Opinion certainly varied but there is one celebrity that blatantly expressed her dislike over new Moon or anything that have either Vampire or Loups-Garous (Werewolf) in it..., it's Miley Cyrus. Miley Cyrus, who is about to turn 17 on November 23rd 2009, exactly says "I've never seen it and nor will I ever, I don't believe in it. I don't like vampires. Miley Cyrus photoI don't like the wolf that pops out of the screen when I'm watching my TV at night, I don't like it. I don't want anything to do with it. I don't like the shirts. I don't like any of it. I feel really lame because everyone's so excited. I'm like, 'Don't even talk about it'" Whoa ok there miss Cyrus, you've made your point very clear there, To fellow moviegoers who might not familiar with new Moon (or The Twilight Saga: New Moon, the sequel to 2008 Twilight), I just want to say that Twilight actually is nowhere near horror realm. On the core, it's actually a romantic movie about the relationship between a vampire named Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson) and a young woman named Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) and of course Bella's childhood friend, the werewolf Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner). Team Edward? or Team Jacob?

It seems Miley Cyrus, the star of Big Fish (2003), Bolt (2008), and Hannah Montana TV Series (2006-2010), might probably doesn't realize how much effort did kristen Stewart and the rest of the cast and crew of New Moon have put into making the movie. Kristen Stewart even has to endure a very bad cold because of the chilling weather on the shooting location in Vancouver, Canada. On her interview with Britain's Time Out "Everyone on these movies is fighting a cold. Constantly. I didn't get sick on (third Twilight movie) Eclipse, but on New Moon, I was deathly ill. I think my defences were down. Watching the movie, my voice is more sultry because I was just sick." Let's just hope that this sequel would satisfies fans and probably even general moviegoers as well.

» Denni Minogue's Nude Confession

[posted: Nov 1st 2009 8:11 pm]

Denni Minogue photo
Danni Minogue has recently confessed the real reason why she was willing to pose nude for the Australian Playboy magazine back in 1995 when she was only 24 years old in an interview with Piers Morgan, on his 'Life Stories' series.

This sister of Kylie Minogue & Brendan Minogue said that she was doing it to pay her debt that exceeded more than £150,000 after divorcing with her husband, actor Julian McMahon (Nip/Tuck TV Series, Fantastic Four, Premonition). Even though this brave action of hers sparked regret from her parents, but she insisted on doing it instead of just simply (and maybe the easy way?) asking money from her sister Kylie Minogue. Talking about pride...

In just 3 days, the issue with Dannii on the cover was sold out nationwide. "The magazine was the biggest selling title they had ever had and they had to reprint" says Dannii. Dannii who sits added "I don't regret it, but I feel relieved that people know why I did it. It's a huge weight off my shoulders."

If not for debt, will she do it again?

» Movie World's News: Julia Robert is filming Eat, Pray, Love

[posted: Oct 31st 2009 11:56 pm]

Julia Roberts photo
Julia Roberts, that has fascinated almost any women in the world through her performance in Pretty Woman (1990), films her latest movie on several different countries. Starting from New York (of course), then off to Naples (Italy), Cherrapunjiin (India) and since Oct 14th Julia is currently shooting her film in Bali (Indonesia). The movie, which is also produced by Brad Pitt and directed by Ryan Murphy, is entitled Eat, Pray, Love. The movie is scheduled to be released around 2011 in the United States. Eat, Pray, Love is actually another movie based on a popular novel, this time it's written by Elizabeth Gilbert who has also appeared in Oprah Show for her novel's fame. The story revolves around Elizabeth's journey to find the meaning of life according to her own perspective. And to do so she traveled to Rome (Eat), off to India (Pray) and then to Bali (Love).

As of Oct 28th, it was reported that a well-known Indonesian actress, Christine Hakim would also be in the movie playing the role of a school Headmistress and sharing the same scene with Julia Roberts and even has already filmed her first scene on that very same day. Herlina Nathalie Christine Hakim is a prominent Indonesian actress known for her role in Pasir Berbisik (2001), Daun di atas Bantal (1998) and Tjoet Nja' Dhien (1988). Christine Hakim was also one of the juries of the 2002 Cannes Film Festival and has won 6 Citra Awards in FFI. And to add to the Indonesian moviegoers' excitement, it's not only Christine Hakim that will appear in Eat, Pray, Love, but also several other prominent Indonesian actresses: Aryani Krienburg and Ria Irawan who will role as the Mbakyu Jamu Gendong (aka Traditional Medicine Hawker), if this is true, then finally Ria Irawan's memorable role as Mbakyu Jamu Gendong named Juminten in a SitCom Lika Liku Laki-laki will eventually go International.

Controversy abounds surrounding the filming of Eat, Pray, Love since the shooting process required a school activity including all the elementary students to be moved elsewhere so that they don't disturb each other but at the same time several extras (the farmers, fishermen and schoolteachers) were very delighted to be in Julia's movie and to be even paid up to Millions of Rupiahs.

Those who have been to Bali must have visited a site where the tourists could interact closely to the wild monkeys in the area. There are several sites like this in Bali, but concerning Julia Roberts' movie, the filming is held in monkey forest (Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary) in Ubud, Gianyar, Bali which is managed by Mandala Wisata Wenara Wana Foundation. And for this particular purpose, as many as 18 Monkey tamer are provided to make sure the monkeys would 'behave' around Julia. It's understandable, since to-date the forest houses 340 monkeys (32 adult males, 19 male sub adult, 77 adult females, 122 juvenile and 54 infants).
