Finally there's a light in a dim world of game-based movies. Although the light is not so bright, but still it's a light. That light is Hitman, a movie based on a hit video game franchise with the same title. It stars Timothy Olyphant and cost the filmmakers about $24 million, will Hitman live up to the fans' expectations?
I played Hitman, in fact I could be considered a fan. So probably my review takes into account of semblances the movie holds with the original game.
Hitman is the Agent 47, a product of mass cloning operation to make a series of high quality assassins. What Agent 47 does is to assassin people that have been targeted by his clients, Agent 47 is given the whole information and statistics about his targets by Diana, the contact of the organization where Agent 47 works. Diana is also the person who tells Agent 47 about his next target.
Agent 47 (Timothy Olyphant) gets an order to kill the Russian President Mikhail Belicoff, he hits the target with a sniper rifle, but somehow Mikhail (Ulrich Thomsen) is still alive and Agent 47 is told there's a witness to the scene, a girl named Nika Boronina (Olga Kurylenko). When Agent 47 is about to kill her, he finds out that Nika has never seen Agent 47 before. Knowing that he's been set up, Agent 47 kidnaps Nika and bonds friendship with her. Together they attempt to unfold the conspiracy and to get the job done.
Initially Hitman was going to be headlined by Vin Diesel, but eventually it was replaced by Timothy Olyphant. I'm not taking side here, for the reason that Hitman really is a unique figure and personality which I'm sure neither Diesel nor Olyphant could played it well. Olyphant is too sweet, in the contrary to the movie which is too serious. We have seen many good movies based on Good Comic Books (or so to say Graphic Novels), but why is it so hard to make a good movie out of Video Game, realizing that it has much more live movement to be taken example of compare to comic books. Olyphant has this strange smile, which I think reflects much more of a crazy man than to a cold-blooded killer. Probably it's because graphic novels excels in Storyline department.
Set aside all the flaws, we get the good side of it, and that's the action. It's fun to see how Hitman performs the tasks given to him with his own style and stealth action. Shooting and Sniping where Hitman never misses his targets. To Olyphant's credit, he doesn't exaggerate his acting and that's good, but maybe for a movie, he might need something more livelier expression than that.
All in all for the fans, this bald dude is a very nice gift. However for other fellow moviegoers, Hitman is only another entry in the action genre that may not be outstanding but good and entertaining enough to watch.
