Messing with the wrong person, it may be a very bad mistake in the real world, but it sure is one heck of a delightful decision in the movie world. Often found in Action or Revenge movies, this time we got another one. Based on a novel written by Stephen Hunter called "Point of Impact", Shooter's filmmakers already have a good story at hands, all they gotta do was to make it right. I'm glad to say Shooter hits the target accurately.
Mark Wahlberg is Gunnery Sgt. Bob Lee Swagger, an ex-sniper who is betrayed by the government and had to lose his best friend. Three years after, he is seen hunting and living a modest way alone up in a beautiful mountain. Later on, he is called upon by Colonel Isaac Johnson (Danny Glover) for another duty, which is to assess the possibility of the presidential assassination from a sniper's standpoint.
---Start of Spoiler Possibility Alert---
Colonel Isaac Johnson turns out to have another evil agenda. Bob Lee, instead of appreciated for his patriotism, he is framed for a huge crime. Being severely wounded physically and emotionally, he had to resort to the only one person who might trust him, the widow of Bob's best friend, a woman named Sarah Fenn (Kate Mara). In the name of justice, this American Hero seeks out to seal the deal.
---Finish of Spoiler Possibility Alert---
No doubt whatsoever from the performance of the whole actors and actresses populating this action film. Mark Walhberg indeed fits his character very smoothly with all his previous performance as an agro person who seeks revenge. Not to mention the rigorous training he must have endured to play the role of a sniper. For this serious movie, choosing Mark Walhberg was a brilliant decision. Then there are Elias Koteas, Rhona Mitra, Michael Peña and Danny Glover who are seem over-capacity for supporting roles, but it's actually a treat for the audience to see supporting characters are played seriously by great actors. Because this action film is heavy...Yes it's weighty on every side, heavy on the training, heavy on the action (of course), but it's also heavy on the materials that dare to touch sensitive government issues.
And I don't usually nitpick, but even if I wanted to, there is not much to be found here. Even the scene where a man grabs his belt to tie it up on his wound is not forgotten, you could only see it for two seconds, but the filmmakers did not forget it, excellent.
For the ending scene, don't worry guys, don't think that Shooter is without a twist, a brilliant twist that's just like playing a chess game. Shooter once again deserves critical acclaim for the storyline. It opens with a bang and ends it with an even bigger bang. All that being enhanced with a hefty dose of explosion and gun fight...? Now, that's action...
One of the best action movies in 2007, you don't watch it, your loss. Try to get a hold of the DVD in case you miss it, this is absolutely worth to watch.
