Cast of great actors doesn't insure a great movie. What it insures maybe is just the performances, for the rest aspects of the movie, well it's not guaranteed solely by them right? You're probably sucked into seeing this movie because of the cast or perhaps because the cutting-edge hacker theme, but frankly, it's not a good action movie.
Stanley Jobson (Hugh Jackman) is one heck of an ex-hacker, employed by a mysterious man named Gabriel Shear (John Travolta) to get into an account of long-dead secret government operation by the name Swordfish and steals money as much as $9.5 billion. Stanley accepts this job with a payment as much as $10 million. Thinking by having enough money, Stanley could win back the custody of his daughter Holly (Camryn Grimes). Things then starts to unwind revealing that Gabriel's side-kick Ginger Knowles (Halle Berry) and Gabriel himself are much more wicked and despicable megalomaniacs.
Swordfish has an opening sequence serve as an example of what an action film should start with. It's action-packed. But after that the pace is rather slow, although it's used to give us a glimpse of the characters, but still it's uninteresting.
Mentioning the lines of dialogue, for hackers maybe the terms used in this movie just a child toy, but for general moviegoers, the lingo is maybe kinda weird. What lingers in my mind though, it's the performance of Camryn Grimes. Her dialogue and the chemistry between her and Jackman is heartbreaking, the look on Jackman's eyes is genuine. About Jackman's acting, well it's funny to see him hacking stuff accompanied by techno music and posing like a DJ. The one that should be given more screen time is Vinnie Jones, probably he could give a different tone to this mind-numbing action-wannabe movie.
This film blows the entire budget for nothing worthy enough really, the more minutes elapse the more stupid it becomes. If you're looking for Kaboom & bang bang movie, there are many other better movies than this. Swordfish just swims right in the sea of mediocrity, even lower.
