It's always nice to see a green, weak, innocent and naive guy being turned to become a real badass with deadly skills. There is something satisfying to see the victim (in this case, of everyday's life at the office!) being transformed into someone who is able to defend himself and make his opponents weep. A premise that's actually moth-eaten but still nice to see. As it is also the case in Wanted. But Wanted's final result is completely cool! Although cheesy, but the cheese is tasty!
Wesley Gibson (James McAvoy), an ordinary man who works in a cubicle in an office where the boss is bitchy, it looks as if his 9-to-5 life is never gonna change until one day a foxy girl named Fox (Angelina Jolie) 'kidnaps' Wesley and escorts him to safety amidst all the bullets flying around. Wesley is revealed to be the son of a very famous assassin that has just got killed in a rooftop gun fight. Wesley's father, Fox, and the other guys at the safe house are actually members of the Assassin Fraternity, a secret society led by Sloan (Morgan Freeman). Sloan asks Wesley to join them after Wesley, unexpected and unbeknownst to himself, could prove his extraordinary killing ability by shooting the wings off the flies. Soon Wesley is taught all kind of killing skill to accomplish his missions and to kill his father's assassin.
Most audience watch an action film simply to be entertained with the intensity, and Wanted does just that perfectly. With over-stylized directing that precisely hit the target without being too campy, Wanted has delivered one thing that mostly lacks even from action movies... Fun! Fun with the guns, fun with the characters, fun with the special effects, and fun with the jokes! The last aspect is truly appreciated by me and the rest of the moviegoers at the theater. It's like seeing Shoot 'Em Up (2007), where I was willing to overlook most of things just to enjoy the mere fun that it gave. The jokes are clever and simple, Wanted can turn a simple line like "I'm Sorry" to be something funny.
Alright, some special effects are obviously borrowed from Matrix, but why not? As long as they're altered a little and added with spurring blood which makes them instead of sickening, they're just simply cool! Of course your logical thinking should take a rest for almost the entire running length of this film, but hey, again, why not?
A good selection of actors too, the green James McAvoy with his innocent face is being mentored by Morgan Freeman who has experience in mentoring Brad Pitt in his another movie. Angelina Jolie who suits perfectly as the foxy killer, probably taking advantage for remembering her performance in Mr. & Mrs. Smith, and eventually the brief performance of Terrence Stamp that completes this movie.
With great choreography, funny lines of dialogue, awesome car chasing scenes, extensive gun fight, solid performance, fast pace, and last but not least, a quite amusing twist in the storyline, no wonder the cinema was full. And although the storyline won't be validated as memorable but Wanted is a great movie to kill time with extravagant effects and fun entertainment.
