Slackers, Punks, Nerds, Strippers, Space Sluts (extremely hot chicks with large breasts), Ostriches, French, Twins. How do you combine all those stuffs into a comedy? Dude Where's My Car crammed it nicely since they put some humor in-between. Although sometimes they are unfunny.
Maybe I'm not being entirely evenhanded in reviewing this movie, cause before I saw it I was in a hectic situation, so watching this movie helps to ease my minds. The movie has successfully maintained its comedy pace fairly, it doesn't get too comedic, and it definitely doesn't fall into drama genre, it means Dude Where's My Car is not a boring film but it is also not a great one. Maybe to the filmmakers' defense, this is absolutely a movie about two boneheaded slackers in a simple quest of searching their (Jesse's) car, so you are not going to expect a lot from slackers, are ya?
Waking up one day in a fine morning, Jesse (Ashton Kutcher) and Chester (Seann William Scott) finds their car is nowhere to be found hence the title Dude Where's My Car? (simple title for simple-minded flick). After realizing they haven't got a single clue what the heck has just happened the previous night, they retraces their stoned steps with the help of Nelson, got caged for being mistaken as ostrich poachers by a french, and eventually got ditched by their girlfriends the twins, yanked by a group of Nerd cultists who believe Jesse and Chaster have the Continuum Transfunctioner (a very powerful and mysterious device and it's mystery is only exceeded by it's power) that has the ability to destroy the universe, and the object of searching by 2 group of aliens, The Space Sluts and The Totally Gay Nordic Dudes.
Ashton's acting is convincing enough as the smarter one, but seann's stupid face is so fake, nonetheless the real challenge in this subgenre of comedy is how to look stupid as convincingly as possible. All supporting cast performs good. This is the kinda movie that some people will reference to in decades to come, not because that it's an excellent movie, but for its representation of some dudes in its era and of course for the slacker theme. Heck it has already become a cult ever since the release of its DVD Version.
So Jesse and Chester is Cheesy and Jester, but even so, all the nuttiness and flaws in Dude Where's My Car is forgiven in the name of Comedy. The bottom line is, it is an entertaining flick.
