Last year notorious Date Movie now has its spin-off (kinda), despite it's an unfunny comedy, Date Movie has achieved considerable success with its income as many as four times of its budget, considering the budget itself was only $20 million. Of course Aaron Seltzer wanted to make another movie. This time they call it Epic Movie. Why do they call it epic? I am not sure.
Two major movies spoofed in Epic Movie are Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. The movie revolves around four orphans Lucy (Jayma Mays), Edward (Kal Penn), Susan (Faune A. Chambers) and Peter (Adam Campbell) who initially live in separate worlds brought together by fate through a means of a golden ticket from the Willy Factory. Given the tour by Willy in his factory, soon they learn that Willy intends to kill them, and he does, but then on the next scene they just brought back to life again (since this a spoof film, who the heck cares), then they hide before they finally walk in to the magical wardrobe that connects them to the magical world of narnia. There they have to fight the White Bitch (WITCH), with the guidance of Harry Beaver (got it?), the teachings of Harry Potter, the highly questionable help from Captain Jack Swallows, and of course with the support of Aslo the horny half-man and half-lion in exchange for a group sex.
What do get from here? Something epic? Nope. Something funny? Yes, Epic Movie turns out to be a much better movie than its predecessor Date Movie. The spoofed movies are tied together more tightly than before into a quite interesting story, nonetheless the jokes are still crude, shallow, and a large part of it...Unfunny.
This movie only appeal to those who have seen all the original materials spoofed in Epic Movie, the joy is to figure out what Aaron Seltzer and his crew had in mind to make fun of those movies, considering that not everyone with bright ideas has the means necessary to make a movie. Not everyone has seen all the movies, so I guess it would be much more fun to see it with your friends and discuss about it while watching it. For others, there's no quality in this movie. All cast perform as they should be, in sense that they don't have any room to show their acting capabilities. For me personally, it's fun to see David Carradine dance.
In the future maybe this film would become an epic, in the meaning of it serves as a quick reference to know what movies like back in 2007 and 2006, what is the popular culture in this era. Actually this movie has the potential to be a great movie, but somehow all the filmmakers did, was just ripping off other movies and put them together without considering other aspects, heck even the musical score doesn't help. Epic Movie debuted directly at # 1 position on its opening weekend, so I highly believe there will be the next spoof movie made by Aaron. Hopefully, it will be a much better movie than Epic Movie.
