As I've already predicted, last year Epic Movie is followed by Meet the Spartans. Hearing the name Spartans, you all know this movie spoofs one of the best movies in 2007, the 300. Surely, all heroic, patriotism and other epic stuff found in 300 will be replaced with cowardliness and stupidity (as always) and with the recurring spoof on Paris Hilton and other pop culture icons. Why do I state Paris Hilton? Well she appeared in Date Movie, in Epic Movie and now her parody will have more screen time in this parody film. I think on some level the Director Aaron Seltzer is a fan of Paris Hilton.
The story goes exactly like the movie 300. Leonidas (Sean Maguire) the future king of Sparta initially have to endure cruel training to be a good Spartan warrior, after killing a freaking giant penguin as his final test, he married Margo (Carmen Electra). One day Sparta is facing a great danger when the emissary of the great king Xerxes' of Persia arrives to demand the Spartan's surrender, which leads to Leonidas kicks the emissary and his bodyguards along with some people from pop culture such as Britney Spears and Kevin Federline into "The Pit of Death". Afterwards, Leonidas assembles 12 Spartans (count them) to go to Hot Gates to face the Persians' Army where they engage in the first battle (emm dance battle, spoofing dance movies like Stomp the Yard and You Got Served). Ultimately the Spartans have to meet the great king Xerxes (Ken Davitian) himself.
On the level with you, although I am quite embarrassed to say I occasionally laugh at Meet the Spartans. Improvement...concerning the term improvement, Meet the Spartans have improved the quality a lot compare to Date Movie and Epic Movie. That's not to say that it's a great movie. It still uses shallow and crude plus disgusting jokes, but not as many as its predecessors. It's a shame that some jokes that are quite fresh in this movie abused in quantity and in time to the level of boredom, if only they knew when to stop.
Before this movie reach the scene of "Pit Kicking", it's a fun movie, but afterwards it just throws everything into the scene, which got me realized that this probably the movie that doesn't have its own jokes. All the cast performs as they should be...goofy. But I guess that's exactly what this comedy film needs. It's like a freakin’ kindergarten! A Kindergarten crammed with a bunch of man-child who is running around, hopping, laughing and poking fun at others. But if you don't mind the jokes and want to know how our today's pop culture being parodied, this movie is worth watching.
