The Movie Review

Apparently, Mummy does not much have space in recent years' movie world. This classic horror figures instead only got a film or two that highlight it, such as Mummy Returns and its sequels, and those flicks too were not pure horror, but instead falls to the fantasy genre. However, we get too see another one, and the one that actually falls to the comedy genre, yup even though the figure of the mummy is scary, but it's wrapped in tone of humour. And, it's actually funny!

Okay, now the storyline is pretty simple, a newlywed couple Brad (Adam Rihacek) and Kat Stephonik (Natasha Randall) buys a mummy from an antique shop that turns out to have magical power. But the power is only evoked if a person

(in this case the buyer) wears magical scarf, then she/he will be able to control the mummy. Whatever the wearer does, the mummy (Glenn H. Martin, Jr.) does exactly the same. However, the Brad and Kat at first don't know this, and since it's a woman scarf, then the male mummy does pretty much girly stuff...

Well, talk about simple premise, but my, it's funny, no, it's hilarious! Concerning a comedy flick produced out of low-budget, My Mummy could deliver some laugh-out-loud which are quite many that are essentially made out of simple idea. The thing is if you are normally scared of creepy figure like a Mummy, then if you could actually see that Mummy does some pretty crazy and wacky things, he's not that scary anymore, instead he becomes a laughing stock. Fortunately the filmmakers know how to amuse its audiences and how to make them laugh.

Some flaws do exist, two big ones more precisely. First it's the running length. The filmmakers lengthen this flick too much into a tedious one, to the extent of becoming a boring movie that filled with void only. Probably in order to fill the rest of the remaining minutes. It's a shame though, cause when everything should be ended nicely, it tries too hard to keep it going, thus making the jokes become dry as well, and exaggerated. The second would be the acting quality that is so greatly divided between ok to poor. Natasha and Adam's performances are okay, Glenn Martin is also very funny but the rest are just awful. This is why a director should have never be one of the main supporting cast, cause the poorest acting comes from J. Todd Anderson himself who roles as Earl.

I'll say, if you could find a cheap enough DVD of My Mummy, it's actually worth buying. A fairly decent direct-to-video comedy that reminisces a comedy from the classic era.
