Alright, the guys from National Lampoon are just getting wackier! This time they deploy slackers to the Stone Age! And of course along with a bunch of beautiful gals and a definite raunchy formula. And they gave it a title, a scientific one that has been the source of giggling for the students in the classroom. Although this film is also known as National Lampoon's The Stoned Age.
Directed, written and starred by the same person Adam Rifkin. The storyline revolves around a young Neanderthal named Ishbo (Adam Rifkin), a young man who thinks outside the box or in other words, a philosopher. Ishbo spends his day by thinking what the true meaning of life is. However, the people of his tribe simply ignore him and think of him as more brain than brawl (useless for that era) and for this kinda reception, Ishbo doesn't have a very happy live among them. A matter worsened by the fact that the only girl he loves, Fardart (Ali Larter), has a crush on Ishbo's big burly brother, Thudnik. Thudnik (Hayes Macarthur) is the exact opposite of Ishbo, a guy who has slept with every girl in their village simply by clubbing their head and drags them into his cave, a practice that's supposedly common in that age. One day Ishbo's tribe lead by his very own father Mookoo (David Carradine) is at war with their nemesis that led to Fardart being kidnapped by the enemy. Ishbo sets out to rescue Fardart all by himself. Will Ishbo finally win at least the heart of Fardart?
Frankly I did expect for something as memorable as Van Wider (2002), and boy how I was disappointed for Homo Erectus still lives in the same raunchy-wannabe-but-not-funny cave. Most of the time the story is explained through Ishbo narration. And in-between, we only see how unique the concept of cavemen talk and live just like they're actually live in the modern world. For example, Ishbo uses words like dude, whack, and several curse words, Ishbo invents pants, and Ishbo's brother Thudnik drills the other cavemen with modern military practices, Ishbo's friends Zig and Zog invent weeds, a naked old man (William A. Tyree) with his long beard covering his penis and...certainly, by owing to the title "Homo", then there's a gay guy who serves only to, well, to be Homo. I'm sure some of you would think that the jokes I've listed above are funny, the truth is, they're not.
Actually the premise is full with great promises. Exploring the live of cavemen with a different view from what Flintstone have already given us is an exciting concept, although Homo Erectus is actually the raunchy or adult version of Flinstone. However a concept alone is not enough without the adequate support of funny quips and dialogue. David Carradine and Ali Larter are absolutely not performing the best of their careers and although they're not miscasts, but they provide only a little to the overall quality of the movie.
I do like one thing the most about this film, it seems that every actors and actresses are having a good time playing their parts in the movie. It certainly brings a good atmosphere to the overall comedy tone. Gladly, the jokes here although not very funny, but they're different, so it doesn’t always fall to the clichés valley.
A comedy movie is certainly expected to be actually funny and not just by showing a list of various types of women that a comedy movie can be said as a success. Homo Erectus relies heavily on the supporting cast filled with Sooo many gorgeous chicks, but with only a couple of chuckle inducing scenes and only one/two laugh-out-loud moments, Homo Erectus is just a below-mediocre comedy flick.
