Breakthrough! Yup Van Wilder is a breakthrough in the story aspect. As you have probably already known, that since the legend of American Pie back in 1999 with its MILF-popularized term, there are numerous and copious movies sharing the similar theme, most precisely they're raunchy and gross! Time proofs that they're liked by all teenagers across the globe. And being released by people who also brought you the famous/infamous Animal House, I guessed Van Wilder would have the same quality. Actually Van Wilder's premise is simple, but the story itself is unique.
Van Wilder is a student in the 7th year on his Coolidge College. When all students are trying hard to graduate, Van Wilder, on the contrary, trying so hard not to. Since Van Wilder (Ryan Reynolds) is also some kind of hero in the university. And he also has a charming personality and a kind heart with benevolent acts that have touched almost all facet of the college. One day Van is looking for a personal assistant to manage Van's busy agenda, so many students apply, but it turns out Van is hiring an innocent but vigorous exchange student from India named Taj Mahal Badalandabad (Kal Penn).
At the same time, Gwen Pearson (Tara Reid) a journalist of the college is assigned to do a report about one of the most exotic creatures named Van. But being a modest guy, Van does not like to be interviewed and investigated. The persistent Gwen keeps on trying and in the process there seems to be love sparks on them. Gwen's boyfriend Richard (Daniel Cosgrove) the narcissist guy who is also the president of DIK (Delta Iota Kappa) is green with envy and plans to get back on Van Wilder. Van himself is now confused with his own principal of "Don't be a fool, Stay in school" when Gwen gives her another view of his life.
Talking about character building, it's satisfying..., recalling there weren't many gross-out comedy films like it. Van Wilder is a real character, the one that really stands out, and Ryan Reynolds whose face and facial expression are just like Jim Carey, and with his-though-sometimes-over-the-top acting is a good choice to be Van Wilder. He has the charm to impersonate a legend like Van Wilder. Tara Reid herself was famous for her role in American Pie (1999), so she blends well with the story although I do think that Amy Smart could have more chemistry with Ryan than Tara does.
The comedy, yes they're fun! So many funny, chuckling and laugh-out-loud moments interconnected in an enjoyable pace, and ease-to-mind dialogue with several interesting characters. As I recall other previous teen movies, Van Wilder delivers one of the grosses payback to his enemy! A great revenge, funny, hilarious, gross and satisfying! ;-) I'm pretty sure this scene particularly would be memorable for some time to come. There are a couple of scenes that's actually moving too, but not that emphasized so it would not make you shed a tear. Now being informed about all that, surely you do not expect something very intricate and clever do you? It's a comedy teen movie! Something you should enjoy without having to think hard.
Teen movies should be proud with the advent of Van Wilder, and I do hope this entertaining film is not going to be followed by a sequel. Since I think it would be better especially for Van's story to be stopped and be memorable while it's still on its hey day. Write that down.
