The Movie Review

Simple title, simple plot, simple movie entitled Popcorn is a new British 2007 romantic comedy movie. This comedy film begins with a scene where Danny (Jack Ryder) is seen standing clumsily in front of a theater where he is waiting for his little sister, while the other guy next to him is seeing the movie with his date. Danny is a typical nerd who doesn't know how to talk to girls and is an avid fan of Japanese comic book, so-called manga. When Danny and his sister are line up to buy the ticket, Danny is flabbergasted of the sight of a beautiful girl Suki (Jodi Albert) that resembles a lot to the female manga character.

Danny then decides to enroll as an employee of that theater, the Moovieworld, there he has a bigger chance to

get to know better Suki. Zak (Luke de Woolfson) the chief projectionist feels sorry for Danny's insecurity, and so Zak and his girlfriend Florence (Colette Brown) try to help Danny by applying methods that have been proved effective but only in the movie and not in the real life. Will Danny finally get to date his dream girl?

I think I should've brought a note in seeing Popcorn, to write down a thing or two about theater it occasionally teaches us. It's quite fun to know those things, but regrettably the chuckle-inducing scenes are not that many and added that it uses manga to fill the interlude between chapters which maybe makes it hate-it-or-love-it kinda thing. What tickles me though that the jokes in Popcorn overall tone is kept gentle and subtle, which is weird if this film is intended for teenagers. To the Popcorn's credit, although the jokes are not much, but they are cleverly flirty and fresh, no slapstick in this movie.

There's one thing that irks me though, I keep hearing the same musical score over and over and over and over again. It makes the audience trapped in the same mood which in other words bore us. Interesting fact that this movie was actually filmed at a large theater the Odeon Greenwich, but seeing the inside of this building for almost 98% of its running length is simply dull, munching on popcorn would be a good idea to get through it, and I guess that's when the word Popcorn has a meaning.
