It's now very clear that Will Ferrell and sports are inseparable. From Kicking & Screaming (2005), Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby (2006) to Blades of Glory (2007)...it's all about sports. But since it's Ferrell who write the script, then the used-to-be-dramatic theme of sports movie, all three of them instead intended to make the audience chuckles. And Kudos for Will for that. and...Kudos again for him for Semi-Pro.
In 1976, Will Ferrell now roles as Jackie Moon, the owner of an underdog basketball team called Flint Michigan Tropics. He pays the management and marketing cost with his success of being a singer with his hit "Love Me Sexy". Although Tropics is the lamest team in the league and the stadium is never full with fans, but they're still striving, recalling the harmony relationship between them. Jackie himself is the coach and the player of Tropics. And although he doesn't know squat about coaching, but his dedication to the team is loved by all players. Problem arises when ABA is planning to merge with the NBA, which consequence is those teams that can not reach the top four in the league will have to extinct. Jackie Moon than recruits the veteran Ed Monix (Woody Harrelson) to help his team.
Will Ferrell, one of the members of Frat Pack (Luke Wilson, Vince Vaughn among others) is undoubtedly one of the most high-profile actors in the comedy business. And being a comedian that's already famous since he's still on Saturday Night Live and also an actor who actually has a degree in Sports Information, I'm pretty sure this combination alone is already a guarantee for one good and funny movie. Well, three point score for its bulls eye jokes that hit the target.
Taking place in the late 70s, the filmmakers also put some evidence of that decade. We got hippie, vietnam war veteran, hairdo, outfit, lingo, disco tunes, interior et cetera, so they pretty much have cover everything. This 70s theme provides a different experience for its audience, in other word, interesting. Will Ferrell even wrote his own song for this movie, called "Love Me sexy", and it's actually great with 70s tunes all over it.
Semi-Pro actually starts off with unfunny and uninteresting scenes, but we're actually getting introduced with characters that are just as wacky as the ones in Blades of Glory. Afterwards, the jokes are start to pouring in, and I actually having a good time watching this comedy film. And although the overall story is anything but novelty and frankly not inspiring, but from the comedy standpoint, it's cracking jokes! With fairly many laugh-out-loud moments. There's even a bear fight (freakin' real bear) scene, that's supposed to be categorized as "trying-too-hard-jokes", but Will Ferrell with his own gusto can make the scene, at least, interesting.
All in all, Semi-pro with the steady pace, nice dialogue, good characters, and funny jokes, is a good entry in the comedy world.
