Well it's about time...Yes it's about time that someone finally makes a parody movie of Superheroes. Especially after the big box office explosion that Spider-man made a few years earlier, it's not so surprise if spoof film fans have waited long enough for another spoof movie about those super humans. Horror genre along with comedy and even epic genre have been spoofed. Of course you would probably still remember Scary Movie, Date Movie or perhaps Not Another Teen Movie. Not all of them were critically-acclaimed, but lucky for them, there is a big number of a teenager or people that simply young at hearts who come to the theater to see those spoof flicks.
Superhero Movie is exactly a parody movie that mainly takes the story of Spider-man as its major plot. Along the running time of it, the story will combine other characters from other superhero movies as well. So if you have already watched Spider-man, then you have already had a clear picture of this comedy flick main content. Well, if Spider-man revolves around Peter Parker who got bitten by a spider, then Superhero Movie revolves around Rick Riker (Drake Bell) who got bitten by a Dragonfly. Later Rick Riker must face the truth that he is no longer a normal human being and must use his power to help others, especially by fighting the Hourglass man (Christopher McDonald) who plans to make himself immortal by killing people. But wait...! What about Spidey's love interest Mary Jane Watson? Of course she's there too only in the form of Jill Johnson (Sara Paxton) complete with Rick's uncle Albert (Leslie Nielson) who replaces the uncle Ben of Peter Parker.
For this type of comedy, I assume all fellow moviegoers already know what they're getting into right? In the previous spoof movies, most of them are cheesy jokes that try so hard to be funny but instead ends up the other way. However for Superhero Movie, the jokes are right on target, and I'm so glad that they does. Certainly they're sometimes still revolving around disgusting scenes like throwing up, farting and other dirty scenes. But the intensity and the numbers have decreased significantly compared to other spoof movies like the totally disgusting Date Movie. Still though it refers to some pop culture such as Google, iPods, Facebook, T-Mobile. Those references would probably be really appreciated sometime in the future, when people watch Superhero Movie video for the sake of memories.
The director Craig Mazin and the producer David Zucker were the ones who actually behind the Scary Movie series and Naked Gun which the latter one was headlined by the good 'ol Leslie Nielson too, that's probably why he roles as the supporting actor in this film. And seeing him here has somewhat upgraded this movie and differed it from other previous parodies. Moreover all the actors is performing well and fit to their characters nicely, in a sense they don't overact things. So as I watched the movie, I didn't really feel like watching a simple-mindedly written parody but a series of insinuations to the Superhero genre. Heck even Stephen Hawking get to be joked about as well.
If the previous movies seemed to cram up all kinds of movies into one and ended up being a bunch of incoherent mess, Superhero Movie tries to stick with only one main storyline (Spider-man) and makes it look decent. Of course not the best comedy film ever, but definitely much better than previous spoof flicks in the recent years.
