I have written before in The Dukes of Hazzard (2005) that the movie was just too darn lucky to have gained box-office success despite its entertainment quality. Of course a box-office success will have its sequel, meet The Dukes of Hazzard: The Beginning. I am thankful that the filmmakers were wise enough to have not released it on theater; instead it went right into the TV and DVD.
TDOH the Beginning explains to you how it all started, of course this means a lot to the fans of the first TDOH. But for the fans of the TV series, you will get confused a little for some basic differences between them.
There is this boy named Luke Duke (Randy Wayne) who likes to blow things until one day he almost kills everyone at a festival and got arrested by the cop, and there is this boy named Bo Duke (Jonathan Bennett) who drives recklessly until he too almost kills everyone on the street. Both got sentenced to work on a farm belongs to their uncle Jesse in Hazzard County. Very soon they learn about the slick commissioner Boss Hogs (Chris McDonald), and how to beat the crap out of him and his Sheriff Rosco P. Coltrane (Harland Williams; Surf School (2006)). In order to do that Bo gets himself a car, and the Dukes name it The General Lee which is actually a 69' Orange Dodge Charger. With it they run the mission of delivering moonshine to Uncle Jesse's customers and outsmart Boss Hogs.
Not Jessica Simpson and Johnny Knoxville and Seann anymore, will somehow disappoints some fans, but if you're talking about "the Good Ol' Boys", then the new lead actors seem more appropriate to hold that title. It still uses the same formula to fill the entire running length: lame plot, bad jokes (although much better than the first TDOH), gorgeous female, and the idiocy of the villains. And still this film watchability rate rescued by its car chasing scenes with the ever famous Dodge Charger.
All in all, I certainly do no want to watch this movie on theater, but on TV and DVD I could give it a go. It's fun enough to watch it in a lazy afternoon.
