My goodness..., I am stunned from the first act. I just love soul, jazz and blues. I just love those kind of songs, so if my review is influenced by that fact, well pardon me then :-)
The Dreamgirls was released in December 2006 and it marks the directorial debut of Bill Condon originally based on he Broadway production by Tom Eyen. It's then adapted for screen by Bill Condon himself.
It follows the story of three young girls, Effie White (Jennifer Hudson), Lorrell Robinson (Anika Noni Rose) and Deena Jones (Beyonce Knowles) who are struggling their way to be superstars/divas, they see a chance when an ambitious Cadillac dealer Curtis Taylor Jr. (Jamie Foxx) wants to be their professional manager but...they need to lay low first and only become backup singers for the famous Jimmy "Thunder" Early (Eddie Murphy).
However the three girls along with Effie's brother the songwriter, C.C. White, have to face the biggest decision that will change their live forever when Curtis finally decides to replace the most talented but over-nagging Effie with a new girl. Now the "family" has been teared apart and each has to lead their own lives.
I knew it! I knew that my popcorn's gonna be wasted, I didn't have time to eat it. I got so carried away by the Dreamettes and Eddie Murphy's performance and songs! Forget previous comical Eddie's performances, in Dreamgirls that dude really souls his acting and "Jimmy got soul" alright! Jamie Foxx and Beyonce as well as other members of the cast perform really well and Kudos for them! However...
It is Jennifer Hudson who owns the stage musical or the scenes! I strongly believe Jennifer Hudson will win at least one award for her performance, moreover she should be given other roles in future movies. Jennifer Hudson is one remarkable actress and the strongest character in the film. Every time she is on-screen, our attention would be drawn to her.
After more than an hour, I finally found what I've been dreading for, minimum minutes dedicated for drama when there's supposed to be an ample time of music as well as drama. Conversation is kept minimized, after an hour the audience really needs to rest their ears and see a movie with talking actors and actresses in it. It goes more or less like this: 4 or 5 minutes dialogue, then music, 4 or 5 minutes dialogue, then music. Dreamgirls is on the brink of the Music Videos world, slipped further, this movie ain't nothing but some totally cool Music Videos if not for the acting of Jennifer Hudson. When she shows on screen, wow she's good and her acting performance only can be matched by her wonderful voice. Clearly my next stop will be the music store to buy Dreamgirls' soundtrack album.
By the way who would have thought that Elvis Presley's "Hound Dog" is not his original song, but the songs of Big Mama Thornton? Some worms come out of the can here people, a musical way to learn the truth. And as for the songs or stage musical scenes themselves, of course those who love this sort of music would have their ears and eyes treated very very nicely...
