Fellow Moviegoers, welcome to the world of real terror. You want to actually see a movie in which the definition of horror, terror and fear ring loud and echo throughout? Look no further for this year we have a perfect movie...called Borderland.
You want a seriously demented and horrifying version of Turistas (2006), this is the movie, you want to see the better version of Texas-Chainsaw-Massacre (2003)-like frightening experience, this is the movie. After Dark HorrorFest couldn't be more right in picking a movie like Borderland to put on their list and to be released in theaters. This movie is perfect in every angle. It's really chilling and the terror feels true than ever. Particularly, the screaming in the first scene of the movie, is one of the most memorable agonizing screams delivered by horror genre, where the scream is terrifyingly real and painful to hear.
Borderland is loosely based on true events of a cult in Mexico that practice human sacrifice and have mysteriously operate on Mexican border where their victims are quite random. Three American guys who have recently graduated from high school are planning to have fun in Mexico. They cross the border and decide to stay there for a while and have a local fun before they actually arrive on their destination. On that borderland they get acquaintance with two nice local girls. The five of them are getting along very well but bad luck is on their side while at the same time the cult is currently seeking another human victim, and things are getting really terrifying for them when one of their friends is being taken to the cult's secret village.
There are some terror-pause moments, but that too are executed nicely just like in the real world. There are no distractions from its horror theme, even the way the filmmakers introduce the movie characters to the audience are downright excellent. Many horror movies even still feel the need to deliver entertainment to the audience with a slight of humour or in a form of sexy girls gracing the screen, and those horror movies are actually good. But..., those are distractions to the horror theme and it lessens the tension. While Borderland is actually giving us no mercy in its terror.
Moreover, the storyline is highly intelligent, recalling that this is also actually based on true events. Those soon-to-be-college-boys and their girlfriends do have characters. They act normally maybe just like you or your friends, not stupid, young-blood emotional, respecting their friendship, my...their satisfying. You know..., after seeing stupid college students getting whacked clumsily in other slasher movies, and thinking "why were they there in the first place?" or "couldn't you be smart enough to avoid the incident?” Well cheer! That's not going to happen in Borderland. Normal people in normal condition who just happen to have a very bad luck.
One of the things that really amaze me is the camerawork, boy it's quite rare nowadays. If you have actually seen a movie production process, then somehow everything is not a surprise anymore. I personally experienced that and in the process to try to completely forget what I've seen. Borderland is different, it's good. The musical soundtrack and the ambience are also the perfect match to the entire storyline. Kudos for also choosing to use native language in some important scenes instead of full English to give us the feeling like we're actually in another country.
My my my, what a wicked crime being presented in a great horror movie. Just like what I've said before in my review concerning crime based on true story, my sincerest condolences for the victims' families.
