There are 2 different perspectives in seeing this movie, first this movie is so freakin good or the second a pathetic plagiaristic work with desperate twist on some parts. So, what is Disturbia about anyway?
Kale Brecht (Shia LaBeouf), a good but depressed boy who have lost his father in a car accident, attack one of his teachers during a class when his teacher mentions Kale's father. Sentenced to a house arrest, he then get bored and start to peep his neighbors through his window with two notable “peepees”, the harmless and attractive girl next door, Ashley Carlson (Sarah Roemer), and a mysterious neighbor Kale believes to be a serial killer from Austin, Texas known as Robert Turner (David Morse).
Ashley finally discover that Kale has been peeping on her, but somehow decides to join Kale along with Kale's friend Ronnie (Aaron Yoo) in the peeping game mainly to monitor Robert Turner. Of course Robert is anything but happy upon their investigation.
Does the storyline ring any bell? It's none other than the work of Alfred Hitchcock's back in 1954 with the original title "Rear Window". For some people this is merely a lame copycat of Hitchcock's work, but this is way better than the remake of Psycho in 1998. I prefer to see this movie as a movie of its own, besides not everyone has seen the original Rear Window. Shia LaBeouf is a very talented actor and he uses that talent effectively here, while Sarah beautify Disturbia that makes some people forget of Rear Window and wish to live next door to Sarah. On the other hand David Morse is just not disturbing enough as a wayward serial killer.
Almost every facet in the movie bears a stark resemblance to Rear Window, but if it is derived from Hitchcock’s work, then it must be good, and it is good, it's great. Only a little note though, maybe in a hard attempt to differ this film from Rear Window, Disturbia turns into that of a slasher movie, and it kinda blemishes the suspense. But then again this is not a remake of Rear Window. The slasher add-on of Disturbia, even though unremarkable, but it fits well in 2007 horror trend. This movie is Swell, certainly recommended for a date movie.
