FINAL DESTINATION 3
Storyline:4.5 stars
Cast:3 stars
Ending:3.5 stars
Overall:
4 stars

The latest entry in Final Destination franchise, a.k.a Final Destination 3 repeats the same freaking formula but now it was handled by the original director James Wong who also co-writed the first Final Destination (2000).

If FD1 uses an Airplane, and FD2 uses the Traffic, then FD3 uses Rollercoaster as the ride of death. Wendy Christensen (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) and her boyfriend Jason (Jesse Moss) along with two other friends Carrie (Gina Holden) and Kevin Fischer (Ryan Merriman) are about to ride on a rollercoaster, when suddenly she has a premonition about the rollercoaster accident, she hysterically shouts at the attendant to take off her safety belt. Frighten by her hysterical crying, some of her classmates also get off the rollercoaster. The accident does come true, but afterwards all the survivors start dying by freakish coincidence in an exact order of their seat in the rollercoaster.

Different from the previous one, where Final Destination 2 (2003) starts the movie by adopting the road trip/teenage party tone, Final Destination 3 starts it with a darker tone, it instills a feeling of horror right from the very beginning, whereas the FD2 is also rather slow-paced, FD3 ticks the terror time with little pause in between. This is good since FD3 and FD2 share the similar flaw which they completely neglect character-development, however I'm sure that most audience would overlook that with its fast pace of terror. Still, FD3 manages to draw some laugh. Die-hard horror fans will be delighted to know that it's a gorier film than the previous FDs. Although there is one unnecessary extended violence that will make us cringe, since it's seriously doesn't have to be that over-exposed.

I'm a bit embarrassed to admit that after seeing FD3, I got Goosebumps every time I'm about to ride a rollercoaster. This rollercoaster accident depicted in FD3 makes you feel as if you were on it, and it will draw your full attention until the scene ends. Quite different than what we have in FD2, the car piling up accident was terrifyingly cool to watch, but that's it, we serve only as the audience, we were terrified at it and not terrified with it.

Final Destination 3 is a recommended horror movie to watch, it's even more satisfying to see it with the other audience in the theatre. Some of the comments I overheard back at the theatre, more or less, were "Brilliant", "how could they come up with such freakish death tricks", "Whow, I didn't see that coming" et cetera et cetera. The truth is there is nothing exceptionally new in Final Destination 3, it's just better than the last one, and better is good.
