Several years ago, exactly in April 2004, there was a superhero movie that tells of a group of occultist led by a man wearing black cloak who summons the demon to destroy the world, the movie title is Hellboy. Then one month later in May, there was another horror movie that has the premise of a group of underworld society with the main task to exterminate monsters from this world, Van Helsing. While Hellboy is a great movie, Van Helsing is kind of a disappointment.
Who knew that there will be a movie that combines both movies' premise into one, Guardians. A movie like that, in theory, supposed to be good. Is it now? Let's have a look shall we..
A team of mercs belongs to a secret society is given another assignment to eradicate monster from a small town nearby called Twilight Cove. This team of five hotshots is Marcus the big burly guy, Mika the tough Asian girl, the psychic pale boy, the brunette Karen and their leader, Alex Lovecraft (Shannon Watson). One of them got killed on duty while trying to rescue a girl named Liz (Tara Ketterer), who is one of the town inhabitants. The team later on, by Liz's direction, arrives at a school on what appears to be a temporary shelter and base camp for the town survivors. They are joining forces together to defeat the monsters that appeared to be summoned by a black magician with devilish intention on his mind.
Guardians, on many points, is an exploitation movie. Being a low-budget movie that hires unknown actors, this horror flick relies heavily on blood and beautiful women. However, funny thing is, although the plot and everything in this movie is nothing but a set of clichés, Guardians is actually not boring. I didn't need to stifle a single yawn watching it. Probably because of the steady pace and the intense gun-shooting scenes. Oh yeah, the cameraworks and the musical score are good too, although sometimes over-stylized.
However, then again because of its low-budget, the monster creation is nothing but a cartoon characters that you could easily meet on most Japanese Manga cartoon-based movies. From the time of Black Mask Rider, Megaloman, to Power Rangers. The monsters in the Guardians are quite "attractive" however, when it's come to the fighting scenes, well, it's clearly like seeing Cartoon characters bump ugly with real human. I wonder why the filmmakers didn't use monster costumes instead, so the fight would seem a bit more realistic.
Speaking of the cast which are not members of a-list actors, they could perform quite entertaining. They're expression is not wooden but you could easily tell that they still have many (and many) acting classes to attend to. Perhaps in the actors' defense, it's probably hard for them to have to face fake creatures and screaming/shouting to emptiness.
In a nutshell, Guardians is just another low-budget independent film that turns out to be quite fun to watch with its own mentioned-above flaws.
