Nightmare Man is different, it's good but different..., well, it's different and good! Nightmare Man was a part of After Dark HorrorFest 2007, an annual horror film festival that in its second year released 8 independent horror movies including Nightmare Man.
It tells the story of a woman named Ellen Morris, who's trying to spice up her sex life by buying a traditional mask that is said would give her and her husband William (Luciano Szafir) more fertility. But Ellen (Blythe Metz) rejects the mask on the very first sight of it. Afterwards, she doesn't live normally anymore. She continuously feels being stalked and terrorized by a scary figure wearing the mask that strangely enough it is only her who can acknowledge the presents of that figure. While her husband and her doctor believe that she's only having delusions. Ellen herself is confused with all the sightings, she can't separate the truth from illusion anymore, and the figure will stop appearing only if Ellen takes her medicine.
William takes Ellen outside of the town to a mental facility but on a remote road up at the hill, the car brakes down of an empty gas. Ellen is left alone inside the car, while her husband is walking back to the nearest gas station and refuses to take Ellen along with him because of her nagging. Terrorized over and over, Ellen then runs frantically and seeks help in a local secluded house where there are four young people spending the night, Mia (Tiffany Shepis) who is also the owner of the house, Ed (Jack Sway), Trinity (Hanna Putnam), and Jack (James Ferris). Is Ellen safe or on the contrary that all five of them is now also in danger?
There's Nothing Out There?!
What a great script from Rolf Kanaefsky, and a directing style that is already rare in this decade. Yes the script, this movie strongest point is the storyline. The camerawork also successfully brings the eerie emptiness of the secluded road and cabin area. There are some gory scenes too but they are not overused and delivered in perfect timing. It's only too bad that Blythe's performance is just not total, she's good but she should have put more heart and soul into her role. Thankfully she's helped by the scream queen Tiffany Shepis that gives all out, so to say. And the classy musical score!
Nightmare Man may not be the most awesome horror movie, but amidst all the gore and brutal scenes of nowadays horror movies, Nightmare Man has class, and appeals to people who miss this kind of classy slasher movie.
