Grotesque, I always think that Pathologist is one grotesque job. Ever since my days back at school, where I learned more about biology and the possible majors that I could enroll to, Pathology was the one that I thought I could never be cut out for, for it's uniquely grotesque. Pathology is a branch of medical world that learn about diseases and usually the one that ends up in the morgue. So when I heard that there's gonna be a horror movie about pathology, I just couldn't wait to watch it, cause I know this is going to be different and voila! I was happily thrilled and shocked.
Ted Gray (Milo Ventimiglia) is the new member in one of the most prestigious Pathology programs in the city. His firm hands and confidence personality soon become the attention of all pathologist where he works with, most notably a clique of five doctors led by Jake Gallo (Michael Weston). They don't like Ted for his excellence achievement, but then decide to invite them into their group and play their little play. A twisted play of cause-of-death analysis, a game of finding who's the best (nastiest) doctor that could commit the perfect murder. Intrigued, Ted joins the group only to actually endanger himself especially since Dr. Juliette Bath (Lauren Lee Smith) try to flirt with him and may cause internal jealousy. And you could imagine what an already twisted person that is also jealous can do. Ted has to always find a way to outsmart them before he is the next subject of analysis..
Horror movie alright with superb premise that's also innovative. Pathology is a good combination of horror, gore and intriguing plot. Gore? Why, yes of course. A movie alone about pathologist actually doesn't need for any killing to occur to show some gory scenes, while this horror flick actually consists of so many killings, the filmmakers have got much materials to bring up excessive gory scenes (although not that wet kind of blood-soaked), with most of them are dead bodies being cracked open.
Luckily all that spicy scenes are performed by good actors and actresses. And the one that I find the most excellence is Michael Weston, man.. he's good. His devilish face and expression are just the perfect set for his role as a twisted doctor. His acting and character are the dark side of the moon from his role as the clumsy and dumb Deputy Enos Strate in The Dukes of Hazzard, where he is often fall to the seduction of Jessica Simpson's Daisy Duke.
Milo Ventimiglia also has a cool character that I welcome so much, instead of just seeing the same old new kid stereotype that's usually weak and meek. Milo, who is not only active in film but also in so many TV-series (like Gilmore Girls and Heroes), could bring up the young knight with the impure heart charm as Ted and could almost even Michael Weston's performance.
However, this seemingly great movie for one aspect would fall into the love-it-or-hate-it category. Love-her-or-hate-her more precisely for the brave and all-out performance of the Canadian actress Lauren Lee Smith, yes this gorgeous red hair girl whose character is just like Catwoman in Batman, seducing, sexy, manipulative and deadly. Lauren, that has appeared in Lie With Me and Art School Confidential among others, shows steady and solid acting quality, that plus her brave appearance, why...Who does not love that? So why hate it? Well not actually hate her character but it's just her brave performance kinda steals the horror atmosphere from Pathology, yeah, it lessens the terror a lot.
But then again, Pathology's concept in combining those elements is not new anymore. Instead it's kind of a new (recurring) trend in Hollywood. If you like this combination, Pathology will be a highly entertaining fast paced horror flick, but for moviegoers who are not, its sick Pathologist premise still could be intriguing.
