Usually people already think negative of a sequel, they believe that a sequel probably made just to cash in some extra bucks from fans or unlucky enough to be sitting at the theater. But for a me, like it or not, I will have to sit at the theater to see one. Fortunately this sequel here (or more appropriately Prequel) that I review, it's not that bad of a film. Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning is the sequel of the 2003 Texas Chainsaw Massacre. A bit info for you, the TCM in 2003, produced with a budget for only 9.5 million dollars has brought back an income for as much as eleven-fold its budget. Now, who doesn't want to make a sequel out of that?! From the filmmakers’ point of view, that is. TCM itself is a remake of the ever notorious/famous 1974 slasher movie with the same name.
Texas Chainsaw Massacre was actually loosely based on a true story of a serial killer named Edward Gein who lived in Wisconsin U.S. This horror movie, by the way, still tells the story of a cannibal family lived in Texas. And why did they become cannibals, that's what this movie is for. To give us insight and explanation to what really happened to Leatherface and his family that made them such detestably scary persons. The movie is set in July 1969 where we follow the journey of two brothers Eric (Matthew Bomer) and Dean (Taylor Handley) on their way to become soldiers in Vietnam. They bring also their girlfriends along with them Chrissie (Jordana Brewster) and Bailey (Diora Baird), while on a remote road in Texas, their jeep suddenly hits a cow and flipsides, leaving them slightly wounded. A sheriff named Hoyt (R. Lee Ermey) comes to the scene and instead of helping them he seems to place them as the guilty ones and takes them to a house. The infamous house of Hoyt’s.
It's actually tiring to always compare the remakes with the originals, and wouldn't it be better for us to just enjoy the show. If it's good, it's good, and if it's not then skip it. TCM The Beginning, now that's the one that sits in the middle. Seeing from the good parts, well just like other good/bitter horror movies that are inspired by true events, don't you expect to see scenes that cater to your satisfaction. On the contrary, TCMTB comprises of scenes that cater to your fear, to make you frighten and shocked. Thus making this horror movie is actually suitable for die-hard horror fans only, or at least those who are not squeamish. Why? Because this slasher flick is anything but nice, the filmmakers seems want to win the race of grisliness and cruelty among other demented slasher flicks released in the recent years. By that, the un-rated version gives the audience more graphical violence that even I actually disapprove. We as the audience could easily catch the drift, that Leatherface with his chainsaw is insane, without having to see such vividly violent graphic.
Viewing from the down side, it's just another sick movie with great actors and actresses populating the movie with high emotional involvement but sadly without any strong characters except for Sheriff Hoyt who is demented but a bit comically scary. But the biggest tickling of all, isn't Texas Chainsaw Massacre all about Leatherface? Then why he doesn't have any strong personality at all? That even his screen minutes are less than Sheriff Hoyt's, so what we see most of the time is Leatherface simply walking here and there chopping at everybody.
So then again it's up to you, if you've got strong stomach and a curious about the prequel of TCM, TCMTB is not that bad of a movie to continue the last one. But for others, well it's really disturbing to have to sit through the entire movie with no salvation afterwards.
