Turistas, a perfect movie for anybody who can't go anywhere on holiday and a disturbing movie for anybody who has planned to go on a vacation someplace abroad.
I have mentioned earlier on my review that travel agents and travel books should start making a serious movie about traveling abroad and presenting the breath-taking landscape or culture of a country (like in chasing liberty or euro trip). However concerning this movie here, entitled Turistas, I do highly believe Brazilian Tourism Board or any travel agent that has promoting Brazil would be very unhappy with the release of this movie. But for Moviegoers? Of course this movie shakes and rocks!
Turistas as one probably has already guessed involves several tourists trapped in deadly problems in another country, in this case Brazil. Alex (Josh Duhamel) along with his sister Bea (Olivia Wilde) and Bea's friend Amy (Beau Garrett) are vacationing (back-packing) in Brazil. They are riding on a bus on their way to a tourist spot, but the driver of the bus drives so reckless and dangerously until at one sharp turn, the driver could no longer hold the bus on track and finally flipped over into a ravine. Alex and the rest of the passengers get out alive. They start to picking up what is left of their belongings and they even meet several other tourists as well, an Australian Pru Stagler (Melissa George), two British guys Finn and Liam.
They gather around while waiting for the next bus and get a hint from the local about a beach not very far from there. The six tourists manage to find the beach that all of them agree as the ultimate goal for all pleasure-seeking backpackers. And they soon indulge in boozing and other hedonistic acts. Only to wake up the next morning with nothing left on their hands except for their clothes. They've been robbed! Panicking and trying to get some help they roam the area clueless, and barefooted! And when they finally find a village, the real trouble has just begun.
Almost all facet in this film treated very nicely, we get to see the beautiful and lush scenery of Brazil, the beautiful actresses (Beau Garrett, most notably), and the acting is natural and believable. Of course in their position one might think cleverer (much more clever!) than them, but that's probably the demand of the script, and not their acting. So then again no acting is exaggerated, all blend harmoniously with this type of young adult slasher movie.
What about the scary scenes? Oh there's one that would be very memorable and would make some moviegoers cringe and that is also the one that would enrage the heck out of Brazilian tourism board. And some other horror scenes involving cave scene that is claustrophobic (afraid of small places) and at the same time hydrophobic (afraid of water). Plenty room for suspense also exploited fairly, chasing scene that's heart-thumping, the feeling of trapped in a country where it seems no one is willing to help them.
The only flaw though that Turistas is still playing around on the area of teen-slasher-movie (although the actors are not teen anymore), in a sense that some other scenes are just comically frightening not real-world frightening.
With all that facts, Turistas is one captivating movie. It entertains and at the same time disturbs us all.
