The Movie Review
Creepy crawlies especially the spiders have since long frighten people, and have since long also Hollywood made movies about it. In year 2001, there was a movie about spiders entitled "Earth vs. the Spider" which resembled another film with the same name that was released in 1958. And then in 2002 we had another comedy/horror movie about spider entitled "Eight Legged Freaks" which I enjoyed watching it, since it combines the terror, comedy and fun perfectly. And now in year 2003, Webs shows up, well not on theaters but on SciFi channel and headlined by the good 'ol Richard Grieco.
Webs is of course entirely about the horror that Spiders bring to mankind. But on Webs, the spiders are not animals,

they're spider people, that are turned by a spider queen. So the story starts when four electricians are sent to an abandoned building to investigate abnormal electric occurrences. They find what appears to be an old laboratory with a nuclear sign on one of the machines, but foolishly one of them turns on the old machine which is actually a portal to a parallel universe. Four of them enter the portal and land on the same city (Chicago) but only with less people and with spider webs all over the place. They soon learn that this world has been occupied by spider people who take normal people as their food. Now those four electricians have to find a way out to survive in this world, since the portal has suddenly closed which means leaving them trapped in the new world.
Although the premise sounds interesting, but unfortunately the real fact is, Webs is no different than other low-budget animal-gone-wild movies. While all the leading actors perform very well and seriously plays their characters, but again it's the creatures’ appearance that is below ordinary. If you have never watched an animal horror before, Webs might appeal to you, but for veteran animal-gone-wild moviegoers, the spider people creatures are not frightening enough, we could still feel that all of those spider people creatures are merely actors behind the make up.
Webs, after a few minutes turns out to be full only with chasing, hiding, running, and shooting. Webs is devoid of any emotional involvement, although I like the way Richard Grieco cries but it's still not enough. The way the story is being unraveled is highly guessable, we could tell who would die first, who would die bravely, and who would die stupidly, and of course who would live till the end. For a TV movie, Webs is actually not that bad, although it's quite boring if you could already guess the storyline. But if you really dig Spider movies, maybe renting its DVD could satisfy your curiosity.
