There's always something scary about animal, especially the ones with sharp teeth, no matter whether they are wild or domesticated. Now, dogs are nice creatures, and they obey their master's words, what's so scary is if their master is demented. This is basically the premise of Wilderness.
Wilderness tells the story of several young inmates of a reform camp in Northern Ireland who have to be deployed on an uninhabited island after an incident happening on their cell. Steve (Stephen Wight) and Lewis (Luke Neal) are the big bullies of the prison, and they really like to make fun of the weak members of the herds which most of the time are Davie and Lindsay. One day Davie decides to end it all by doing something radical and fatal which its aftermath makes the local governor highly embarrassed. So the governor makes sure that the others will pay.
One of the prison wardens Jed (Sean Pertwee) accompanies these teenagers to make sure they learn the right way in bonding their friendship. On the Island they discover another party only that it consists of two girls led by Louise (Alex Reid). Things are starting to get ugly when a pack of vicious dogs led by unknown man with unknown motive chase them and tear 'em apart. Will they ever survive in this island notably with their enmity nature?
Sounds cliché? Young people stranded on an island waiting to be chopped off one by one? I thought so at the beginning, but it wouldn't be fair to say that to this film. First of all, at least they try to put another reason why these victims should be on that island in the first place. And second of all, there are lotsa gory for gory fans which are depicted clearly all over. And the most important aspect is the pace of terror that it builds steadily throughout the film. All that tied up by the good performance of its cast, yeah of course some of them act over-the-top, but hey! This is a slasher movie with the young ones slashed. You can't expect them to perform like they were in some kind of a golden-globe-award-quality drama movie right? I personally could overlook that.
But then again this movie doesn't escape the flaw trap. It has one major flaw! At first look, the bully scenes at the beginning are just not horrifying enough to make us hate the guts out of the antagonists Lewis and Steve. But, that will be paid, coz you're going to hate them a lot lot lot throughout the movie and expecting for the biggest payment for what they've done. Now..., here comes the biggest drawback, the biggest and the ultimate flaw.., the payback for the main antagonists are very swift and wonderfully executed, a kind of death that is should come for a sidekick only, wow what a very "nice" present. Bummer! Big bummer! Ultimate big bummer! Absolute Big bummer! If they couldn't create a good finale for the main antagonists then why bother making them so detestable? The audience has feeling you know...
And so for general moviegoers who are not that excited to see blood 'n all, that bummer really reduces the "excitement" value of this film, but for the die-hard horror thriller fans, Wilderness scores!
-- Spoiler Possibility Alert --
The main antagonist that stated above refers to Steve, who is a prick, stuck-up and despicable person. He's death is sooo smooth and caring compare to what he has done to others. The other one would be Davie's father the owner of the vicious dogs, that his death is also gentle compare to his killing methods.
