I'm taking a wild guess that most of you readers must've never heard about this movie, let alone the actor. But for me this trashy Sci-Fi flick is mandatory to watch. Solely because it stars Michael Sopkiw. This science fiction film delivers a concept that's anything but new, a movie that actually produced in the wake of Escape from New York (1981) and Mad Max (1979) (with Mel Gibson in it). 2019: After the Fall of New York is an Italian-French collboration movie which was not such a suprise back then to see Italian cinema were trying to cash in the success of many Hollywood motion pictures. So, let me say this now, that this movie here would probably only appeal to the fans of the genre or to the completists.
In this movie, the world is in total chaos. Everything has been destroyed, civilization is only a memory and New York is a deserted place. It was because of the nuclear war which happened 20 years ago triggered by the leaders of Euracs (Euro Afro Asian Unity) who claimed to have won the war against the Pan American confederacy. And now, due to the nuclear holocaust and radiation, deformed creatures and mutants developed and for 15 years there's no single human child has been borned. This means, the fate of mankind is on the brink of total annihilation.
This situation forces the Euracs to use the power of their military forces to hunt for the locals and using the healthy ones for any kind of genetical experiment. On the other hand, Pan-American Confederacy has the edge on Euracs by possesesing a valuable information of knowing there is still one fertile woman living somewhere in New York City. And to get this woman, they hire Parsifal (Michael Sopkiw), an ex-soldier of Pan-American itself and is know making a living in a deadly race. Parsifal is promised a trip to a living planet if he managed to bring the woman back. And to ensure the safety of the mission, he's accompanied by two other mercenaries, Bronx (Paolo Maria Scalondro) who witnesses his family murdered by Euracs and a tough fighter Ratchet (Romano Puppo). Will Parsifal be able to get the woman before it's too late?
Susprisingly the acting in this post-apocalyptic flick can not be equally said as trashy. Michael Sopkiw is very good or at least he has certain character compared to other actors sharing the same role. This is not the best of Michael Sopkiw as I like him more Massacre in Dinosaur Valley (or Nudo e selvaggio (1985)). But overall we got pretty good cast. George Eastman (of The New Barbarians (1983)) is also present as Big Ape, which I think steals the attention in every scene. Actually 2019: Dopo la caduta di New York -- (its Italian title) -- has some pretty solid storyline, the many many bizzare things are connected very well by the mission of searching for the fertile women. Probably what brings the movie down mainly is the production value. You can tell very clearly that the New York City in ruin is just a cheap-looking diorama.
But I'm sure seekers of this type of movie are aware that production values is the not the one we're looking for. But arguably it's to see how the filmmakers depict a world in chaos. And I can say it's pretty good in that department. At least the story is crazy enough to give us the clan of ape, the clan of little people who live in the sewers or the clan of rat people. No balatantly expressed violence to be found but overall this Italian film is pretty decent, if this is afterall your cop of coffee.
> If you cherish the premise of the above flick, try for more Italian Post-apocalyptic flicks: 1990: The Bronx Warriors (1982) and Blastfighter (1984)
> Will the year 2019 be that deadly...?: The New Barbarians (1983), The Island (2005), Blade Runner (1982) and... Daybreakers (2009)
