I was looking for this movie initially just to satiate my curiosity over Rutger Hauer and/or Kathleen Turner movies, but I guess there is no better time to upload this review other than today. A few days ago, Indonesia was kinda shocked by the news of Orangutan killings! The hunters confessed to have been paid monthly by a company in Kalimantan (Borneo) to kill many animals including Orangutan and Hedgehog because they were considered to be pests! And they would earn bonus money if they could especially kill Orangutan... Whow, it's just cruel and cowardice to take down endangered and harmless animals like that and to consider Orangutan (literally means Jungle Man) is a unique species to Indonesia.
Stella Clayton and Climber Michael Walker
In North Carolina, Charlie and Huey are ruthless hunters who shot and collect birds located in Cherokee Island. But thanks to a mysterious Vietnam War Veteran named Jim Malden (Rutger Hauer) who protects the Island and nurtures the animals, Charlie and Huey can be ridden off the island. Jim's combat skill is no match for them.
Angry Hillbillies
Unfortunately bigger problem is going to land on Cherokee Island, when an expert climber/mountaineer (one of the best in the world) named Mike Walker (Powers Boothe of Red Dawn (1984)) is going to try to climb to the top of the cliff to get all the eggs of Bald Eagle. He's doing this because he needs the money to climb the highest mountain in China and he will get the $150,000 fund from an eccentric Billionaire, J.P. Whittier (Donald Pleasence), who collects Bird's eggs from all around the world.
Jim as the owner of the Island will not just stand down seeing his animals being hunt down and he is most especially love the Bald Eagles as he himself protect them and their eggs. And lucky for him, as weird/goofy as he appears to be, a hot widow Stella Clayton who owns the grocery store (Kathleen Turner of Body Heat (1981)) takes a serious liking on him and even her son, Adam Clayton (Andy Fenwick who retired very early by appearing in this movie as his last one) considers Jim Malden as his personal hero. But both Mike Walker and a bunch of vengeful hillbillies are definitely not suitable for Jim Malden and his precious Bald Eagles. What will Jim Malden do? Will Mike Walker get the eggs?
Intimate Moment with Stella
A Breed Apart carries a noble message of saving endangered species and the writers apparently goes creative in making sure the audiences keep on interested in the movie. Interestingly the story is not that linear, I mean yeah sure it's about a man protecting Bald Eagles but the story also deals with something very popular in the 80s... The troubled mind of a Vietnam War Veteran. The way Jim Malden experiences difficulties in socializing or living alone in the island and being a stern paranoid. Somehow A Breed Apart is like seeing a different version of Mac Gyver TV-Series, but of course the adult version of Mac Gyver as this movie also features hot sex scene of Kathleen Turner and Jayne Bentzen which of course the nudity is very graphic. The cinematography is quite beautiful although the music is a standard 80s. But I'm glad I didn't get bored as there is almost no useless scene in A Breed Apart. As I upload this film review, Movielogy.com is the only candidate of entry in A Breed Apart IMDb external review, so I guess the movie is a rare breed...
