The world of movie is so vast that it's almost practically impossible for anyone to know every movie. So when a movie like Alien Trespass comes along carrying a heavy load of nudges, nods and winks to the 50s Alien Invasion flicks, it's not weird for most people to not get the joke. Probably, Alien Trespass is more suitable to be said as subtle inside joke, this science fiction feature film is not only being seriously filmed, but the story itself is not designed as a spoof!
In 1957 California, in the small town in Mojave Desert, an alien spaceship crashes into the butte in the desert. A good doctor named Ted Lewis (Eric McCormack), is intrigued to investigate it silently at night, but only to return as a very different person. His sensual wife, Lana (Jody Thompson), is flabbergasted of his new Ted, although he still looks like the old Ted Lewis but he behaves very odd and enigmatic. Apparently, Ted's body is borrowed by a Outer-Space Marshall named Urp to hunt down the dangerous monster known as Ghota! Ghota (Jovan Nenadic) has also come to Earth to eat its residents and to take over the Earth. Fortunately, for Urp, a sympathetic and courageous waitress with a dream of opening an art gallery, Tammy (Jenni Baird), is willing to help him since she's also very enthusiastic about the outer space. Will they find Ghota monster before it dissolve more victims and leaving only disgusting puddles?
The special and visual effects in Alien Trespass are deliberately made to look "ancient" so the viewers would instantly recognize the connection with the oldies Sci-Fi realm. This decision is of course something that would revive the sweet memories of Sci-Fi fans and make them smile but also will put off modern viewers who are not familiar with the 50s and 60s Sci-Fi movies. The saturated color, the cars, the wardrobes, and even the slangs and also the movie theater which screens The Blob (1958) are just perfect to induce the 50s vibe.
Besides guys, without taking too much space on your brains, how can you take so seriously a movie which features an alien monster that looks like a giant bluish purple pen*s with one big red eye?! I, for one, favor creature like this --man in costume or stop-motion animation-- better than any other CGI monsters. There is something very intriguingly adorable about these creatures. And if this Ghota monster could scare you, then you yourself are a wonder of universe.
Thankfully, although this sci-fi movie is meant to be comedic, but the directing is solid. Even though it runs a bit too slow. Unfortunately, I hate bullsh*t scenes in a movie that serve only as padding to make the movie runs for almost 90 minutes. Nevertheless, the flaws can be patched by the cast which is uniformly solid, they give serious performance and acting with good expressions without being over-the-top or wooden. You know fellas, sometimes in a movie like this, the actors are acting with an attitude of "I know this movie is a joke, so f*ck it!" Well, that's not nice! But not in Alien Trespass, Jenni Baird and Jody Thompson are adorable. Alien Trespass is a nice result of labor of love, this is a great time-waster without being emotional or ultra serious. Recommended, of course!
> Another amusing sci-fi with full blown showdown: Evolution (2001).
> The real body snatchers movie: Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956).
