There are reasons why movies like Alien and Predator sets themselves apart from animal-gone-wild movies that most of them are cheesy. Arguably some of the reasons are, well of course, the big budget. Second, they come from outer space which categorizes them to Science Fiction film genre. And third, they have unique, interesting, and novel storylines. And when some people determined to make the Aliens meet the Predators, as we've seen in Alien Vs Predator in 2004, the movie is pretty much a bummer to fans of either Alien or Predator. But money talks, since the profits from releasing AVP far exceeded its budget, surely AVP would followed by a sequel. What more could AVP: Requiem present us?
AVP: Requiem continues the story in AVP where one of the Predators is seen lying on a bed in their spacecraft, but not for long, since a baby alien suddenly pops out of his stomach. The Aliens begin creating chaos and force the spacecraft to land on earth which is near a small and peaceful town. Two unfortunate souls falls victim to the Aliens and soon a search party led by Sheriff Eddie Morales (John Ortiz) is formed. With no results whatsoever, the town starts to grow unsettled when one of the police officers also has gone missing. One after the other strange, random, and sadistic killing begins to happen. And now, Sheriff Eddie Morales along with his friend Dallas (Steven Pasquale) try to solve the mystery and in the same time save themselves from the warring creatures from outer space.
Whew...probably having seen so many gory horror movies lately, the filmmakers of AVP:R tried to make a similar one? Don't know, but probably to the filmmakers' defense, both Predator and Predator 2 also contains gruesome scenes. However, the gore in AVP:R seems irrelevant and somehow exploitative. The body count is very high people, the supporting cast functions only as bloody targets. I do admire the idea of whacking anyone without having to follow certain cliché of "sexy girls are killed first". As a matter of fact I think the filmmakers is honest to picture that in that kind of chaos, everybody could die anytime. Good thing is that the action is quite solid and with decent performances from most of the people populating this sci-fi flick. It's just there isn't any single strong character to be root for, well except a bit strong for Dallas. And most of the surroundings are dark, but lighter compared to AVP.
On the whole, AVP:R in Movielogy's term is a BBBB or Bloody-Big-Budgeted-B-grade Movie. You got Blood sprinkled throughout an awful storyline but with advanced technology in the special effects department. Since the theater was surprisingly still full of moviegoers, then at least I was not the only "victim" of AVP:R…
