It is widely known that a hero is sometimes a very subjective matter in time of wars. Jesse James is widely known as an outlaw, but in times just shortly after the American civil war between the Union Soldiers and the Confederates, Jesse James hailed as hero by some people. Yes, no matter how heartless they are in killing people, supporters will always be there in times of war. There are already many movies and other works telling the accounts of Jesse James with the most recent one is The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (2007) which is headlined by Brad Pitt and Casey Affleck.
Peter Fonda as U.S. Marshal Kane
On their last heist in robbing the money stagecoach, Jesse James got shot! It forces his older brother, Frank James (Tim Abell of Attack of the 60 Foot Centerfolds (1995) and Cross (2011)), to seek shelter and possibly a doctor to cure the wound of Jesse (George Stults of Hydra (2009)). Luck is on their side, instead of finding lawmen or enemies, they find friends on their way who sympathize for their actions. But the biggest fortune is experienced by Jesse James because he finds a kind-hearted young woman, Mary (Lauren Eckstrom), who not only shares his hatred to the Unions but also tends to his wound, falls madly in love with him and offers herself to be his wife.
Meanwhile, Frank has also found his love-interest in an unlikely situation in a deserted town of Gila Wells, Carrie Anne (Siri Baruc of Glass Trap (2005)). Frank also strikes a deal with a man which is going to ignite enmity with Frank's fellow bandits, Ed Bass (Jeffrey Combs of Parasomnia (2008).
Nevertheless, the U.S. government won't just sit down and do nuthin' seeing Jesse and Frank's action in killing their officers and getting away with the U.S. Army payroll worth of $30,000. Marshal Kane (Peter Fonda of Escape from L.A. (1996) personally assigns his best man, Deputy Marshal Burdette (Anthony Tyler Quinn of Silent Venom (2009)), of U.S. Territorial Marshall's Office to hunt down these criminals.
Carrie Anne Looking for Hot Cash
If you come in here looking for some good (and plenty) action of shoot-outs, bar room brawls or other western-movie material, you are coming to the wrong place. This is a western movie of course, and while it's still an action, but the strength lies to the acting and dialogue fencing of the actors/characters. The real shoot-out scenes are only a few but that does not justify for this movie to be labelled as awful. I won't see this on movie theaters of course, since this is anyhow a Direct-To-Video film, but once you see the opening, the story flows like an interesting episode of long-running Western TV-Series. Kudos to directing style of Fred Olen Ray, the beautiful music, cinematography and convincingly emotional performance of Tim Abell and Lauren Eckstrom. I will not watch American Bandits: Frank and Jesse James for the second time, but I definitely didn't regret seeing it. It's a beautiful film and we can actually grow some liking and interest to Frank James. The movie does not cover the whole episodes in the life of the James Brothers, only a part of it, but the movie may worth a look by western fans. If you're not a fan, then safely skip it.
