American Pie franchise... The first entry was indeed amazing, and American Pie even managed to be a trilogy with a decent closure, and I would say that's about enough. There are also only 3 Porky(s), so when the 4th entry came up, I just couldn't help to think that it must've been be just another effort to cash-in taking advantage of American Pie's big name, but on the same time, I couldn't also help to rush and pop in the disc. And well.. well.. it turned out, American Pie 4 successfully lived up to the expectation! No, no, it even surpasses the quality of American Pie 2 and American Wedding. This spin off movie to the American Pie deserves more than just to be a DTV (direct-to-video) flick. So let's take a look at this 4th slice of the Apple Pie.

Band Camp revolves around the story of Matt Stifler, the little bro of the notoriously foul-mouthed partygoer Steve Stifler. In Matt's senior year, he relentlessly tries to follow his brother's footsteps, to be a total jerk and to be the one who could make T&A flick (Steve made 'Girls Gone Wild' video). In his effort to be admitted by his big bro, on the senior graduation day, Matt Stifler (Tad Hilgenbrink) plays a practical joke on the bandies led by Elyse (Arielle Kebbel) by spraying pepper on each of the bandies' musical instrument, which leads to a relatively severe consequence. Matt is not expelled but it's even worse for him, he's got sent to a band camp and to become one of the band geeks. Being a total misfit doesn't bring Matt down, in fact, his a-hole level even increases by putting hidden cameras on the shower room with the help of his new geeky roommate Ernie (Jason Earles). But at the same time, Matt begins to bond with the bandies there especially Matt's childhood friend, Elyse herself. And Matt even realizes that his big brother was well known not for being a great person, but for being such a noise to the school. What would Matt do being stand in the middle of personality searching? And... by the way do that hidden cameras work? ;-)

What is so good about Band Camp, not only that it excels in presenting women's flesh and gross jokes (and yes, the camera works). But it has some clever use of words too, the dialogues are interesting, fast-paced and funny. Just hear the dialogue between Matt and his roommate Ernie about the meaning of NASA, both have their own terms for NASA and both are retarded in their own ways.

Speaking from the cast performance, just as in American Pie 2 and American Wedding, it's a one man show in the core, the Stifler's Show. Seann William Scott was in charge to make the excitement flows in those 2 movies, and now the responsibility is on Tad Hilgenbrink's shoulder, and kudos to Tad, he must've been observed Seann's character very meticulously. It's like seeing a twin, although with entirely different face and figure, but how Tad acts as Stifler's younger brother, he really deserves to be a Stifler, the wise-cracking a-hole that fans of American Pie love. And while not a single character from the previous American Pie presents in Band Camp (except for the brief scene of Steve, who's played Not by Seann), but at least, we got Eugene Levy and Chris Owen 'The Shermanator' who each of them appears in a surprising way. And it's a glad that all actors and actresses' performances are decent.

Full of good things doesn't mean it skips the flaw section, and I don't point that the jokes are mostly gross-out ones or that it becomes boring in the end. Actually until the end credits roll, this comedy film is highly watchable. But, probably to avoid the entirely generic Happy Ending, the story become highly illogical in the end, how the story ends is truly a nuisance, it's too hard to be believed.

All in all, American Pie Presents: Band Camp is a must watch for gross-out humor lovers, and it's of course a mandatory for fans of American Pie. Band Camp should've got a proper distribution on cinemas, but thinking from the moviegoers' side, it brings a new hope to the DTV market.
