The Movie Review
Oh my.... Embrace Suck. That's what the witch says to a young man in Beastly. I should have known... that's actually what the viewers had to do.. Embrace this sucky Beastly! Yes, on that Sunday night of June 12th I embraced suck where I should've re-watched Limitless (2011) or picked another sacrificial day for Beastly, not before Monday! Ghisssk!
Unlike some people that could walk out of a movie without hesitation, I had to watch it. Aside that I had to write this movie review, I also promised my wife to see Beastly. Because last week, on Saturday MidDateNight, she lovingly curbed her intention from seeing the premier of Beastly and gave way for us to see my favorite Scream 4 (2011) as our Midnight Menu. So this Sunday I promised to take her out to movies for a

night with the Beast. Mmm.. I mean Beastly. And she regretted it... So did I.
An arrogant, pompous and snobbish teenager named Kyle Kingston (Alex Pettyfer) is one true narcissist dude who values style and his outer appearance more than anything. Kyle is the product of a wrong upbringing of his equally-and-even-worse father, Rob Kingston (Peter Krause), who is a famous News Anchor. Kyle currently wins student body president and in doing so he deliberately insults a fellow student named Kendra (Mary-Kate Olsen), who's dressing in scary gothic costume but he unintentionally finds a new dangerous enemy. Kendra is actually a witch with power of cursing people into something she desires.
And after Kendra is offended by Kyle's cruel words, she curses him into a freakish being with tattooed and slashings all over his body. Kyle is given exactly one year to make a girl sincerely fall in love with his now-devious being and says the ultimate healing magic words "I Love You". Confused and flabbergasted of this tragedy, Kyle lives in a new place with his loyal maid Zola (Lisa Gay Hamilton) and a blind home-schooling teacher, Will Fratalli (Neil Patrick Harris). But Kyle still has a dim light of hope in the form of a girl from school that he had never really paid attention before, Lindy (Vanessa Hudgens). So Kyle ---now known as Hunter--- is wearing hood and making many efforts to win Lindy's heart. Lindy herself was initially enamoured with Kyle (before cursed), but the easygoing and laidback Lindy is aware enough not to pursue something that she couldn't have. When the Beast version of Kyle is making moves on Lindy, what will she do? Will Kyle be freed from the curse?
Yawn.... It's so boring! Cheesy, unoriginal, hokey, unromantic and boring. We won't care about Kyle or Lindy or his blind tutor or his maid or the witch. Ahhh... The Witch, that's the saddest thing of Beastly, it's so unbelievable, she even walks like beauty pageant queen. And the the romance, ah the romance... What romance? Beastly arguably supposed to be like Twilight (2008). But I don't see anything romantic about the relationship of Kyle and Lindy. Twilight is not my cup of coffee, but I honestly could really enjoy my time at the cinema watching it without feel bored. What's making this modern take on Beauty and the Beast even more worst is the visual and the shooting location.
Arrghhh... the visual is very sombre and gloomy and gives us the impression of a horror movie, while this isn't horror or thriller or action. And the shooting locations are just mind-numbingly boring! Boring condo, boring room, boring living room, boring green house in the rooftop, and even a huge beautiful cottage by the lake is severely underused. The comedy is almost absent, there are no funny things that could make us smile or feel good and Neil Patrick Harris's one-liners are forced-jokes. He gives much more amusing performance as a kooky dude in Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay (2008).
Beastly is a good option for those having Insomnia because it proved to be more amusing at times than watching your cat sleeping. But it's important to mention that Beastly has one great aspect, the makeup department. Those marks on Kyle/Hunter's face and body are awesome and truly a piece of genuine art.
