Some might say the activity of Nose-mining their own sticky boogers proved to be more interesting than spending one and a half hour watching this beast. Errr... I mean Beauty and the Beast. A movie which is another take on the old fairy tale of a beautiful woman who falls in love with a kindhearted beast. This time it's a movie coming from Australia and featuring relatively unknown cast with absolutely trashy storyline.
I post this movie review in accordance to the recently released movie (and still in Cinemas in time of this review), Beastly (2011) and also another movie which I have posted earlier, Heartless (2009). And it excites me to realize that I would rather see this Australian fantasy flick again instead of re-watching Beastly.
In the age of Kingdoms, a great king Maximillian is dying and leaving no successor. This tragedy evokes the ambitious count Rudolph (Rhett Giles) to take over the throne with the help of his incestuous cousin, Lady Helen (Vanessa Gray). To achieve this they plot to win the heart of the people by capturing the infamous beast who lives deep inside the woods. Count Rudolph and the Witch Helen is framing the Beast for all the occurring murders which are actually done by Helen's own pet, a vicious troll.
But a beautiful and buxom humble village girl, a daughter of a washerwoman named Belle (Estella Warren) is falling in love with the beast after having been saved from a wolf. And she will goes to any length to help the Beast. But neither of them is prepared for the actual truth about the origin of the Beast.
Why would anyone want to watch the movie is as mysterious as the Beast himself. And putting this movie in cinemas would be a "crime", but to air it on TV is anything but shocking. Because frankly, everything in Beauty and the Beast spells cheap made-for-TV movie. This movie would remind you guys with 90s TV-series like Hercules or Xena. And unfortunately the CGI is also hokey, the script is the worst part of all, and the acting is something not to be proud of. Even Estella Warren's acting is very inferior compared to her role in Kangaroo Jack (2003). And probably in an effort to spice things up, the filmmakers opt to put several graphic scenes of bloody murders complete with all the spurring blood from decapitated head and everything else bloody. It's not disturbing, it's even a laughing matter for seasoned moviegoers. But there is zero nudity in this fantasy film and hopefully it's enough for you to stare at Estelle Warren's cleavage. Besides she wears the same costume ALL THE TIME.
Beauty and the Beast almost feels like a so-bad-it's-good type of film. Because it doesn't try so hard to be big. But still it's a crappy b-movie which arguably only interests the die-hard fans of the genre.
> A crappy fantasy that might just give you good fun: Dragon Hunter (2009) and the enjoyably trashy Harpies (2007).
