The Movie Review
It was a lazy and a bit rainy Sunday afternoon on June 26, and we wanted to see an exhilarating movie for the evening. So we drove to a mall near Atma Jaya University called Plaza Semanggi (or nicked as Plangi) in Central Jakarta and we planned to continue our movie-time with a lovely dinner on the rooftop in Plangi Sky Dining with fantastic view of Jakarta cityscape at Night! Whew... we're glad for our dinner plan came true, for that evening would've been a waste of money had it spent only to see Blitz.

I'm pretty darn sure the name Jason Statham is pretty much well-known. Even though one might not familiar with his name but one could recognize his figure easily since his movies are being played over and over on TV, such as: The Transporter (2002), Crank (2006) or War (2007). Undoubtedly Hearing or seeing the name Jason Statham in an action film would make potential-viewers expect for something of high-octane entertainment. Doh! Blitz gives you that alright, but let me put it simple, the intense scenes are scarce and far in-between surprisingly-boring fillers.
The plot is pretty much linear. It even holds no secret or suspense, but the writer tried to trade it off with action elements. There is a tough cop named Detective Sergeant Tom Brant (Jason Statham) who often ornamented the front page of newspapers with his brutal antics in solving the crime. With him around, it's a lot safer for the public but it also jeopardizes the image of the Police force. While the police is busy trying to look good, all of a sudden, a serial killer is targeting the cops and murdering them in cold blood. Hence the tagline "Killer-Cop versus Cop-Killer".
After bragging of the crime he has done to a egotistic journalist (David Morrissey of Centurion (2010)), this psychotic killer (Aidan Gillen) claimed himself as "The Blitz... as in Blitz krieg". Fortunately, Srgt. Brant could bond with a new superior, Porter Nash (Paddy Considine of Hot Fuzz (2007)), who although look soft and meek but seemingly has the same taste for true street justice. Will Srgt. Brant be able to catch the cop-killer before he eliminates another police officer?
I'd been waiting for this action film and I almost traded to see Insidious (2011) on Saturday (18 June) with Blitz at midnight! Boy oh boy, to think that I would've finished watching such relatively lame movie around 1 am in the morning and had to drive all the way back... I made the right choice to see Insidious :-) As far as I'm concern Blitz sells two things only: Jason Statham and Brutal Street Justice.
For the Jason Statham part, he's done his share! As usual he looks very convincing as what the tagline says "Killer-Cop". Brutal, tough, agile and cool. It's a good thing yes, but it's not such a surprise anymore. But the Brutal Street Justice part is what setting this movie a little bit apart of other hypocritical revenge films. Srgt. Brant do not hesitate from beating the living hell out of any criminals and making sure they won't have the guts to commit such crime anymore. And even the supporting cast are all solid, more especially Paddy Considine.
The view from Plangi Sky Dining. You should try it while in Jakarta :-)
However, Blitz only has two good parts, the opening which tricks the audience to think that it would be full of action all the time (Which is NOT). And the ending, though predictable but the idea of "tricking the trickster" is saucy! The audience had some good time back in Semanggi 21 Cineplex and in the beginning I even said to my wife "Me likey the movie", but about 1 hour into the movie, we started to put more popcorns into our yawning mouths as the movie surprisingly got us bored. Don't compare Blitz to other Jason Statham movies and talking about the recent cop films from UK, Hot Fuzz (2007) is way way above Blitz.
