Whew, I was confused... Should I write a review for this 3rd entry in BloodRayne series or should I just dump it. It serves as an unrelated sequel to BloodRayne (2005) and BloodRayne 2: Deliverance (2007). But is this particular movie... mmm, a bloody softcore? A cheap sexploitation movie? A wink and nod to grindhouse era? Or a movie about horny vampire?! One thing clear, the movie prone to be thrown some bricks by fans or by moviegoers alike. Especially those Uwe Boll haters :-)
Rayne is a damphir, which means she's a hybrid of Human and Vampire. Rayne (Natassia Malthe) posseses the strength of both worlds but none the weakness, except for the thirst and pale face powder. In this era of World War II, Rayne is basically still does the same thing she's good at, hacking and slashing people, only this time it's the Nazis. But on her latest mission in putting the Nazis into their eternal sleep, Rayne bites a Nazi Commandant (probably out of impulsive bloodlust), and instead of ending problems for the city, she creates bigger danger because Commandant Ekart Brand (Michael Pare) is now turned into vampire with 2 million soldiers behind him. (not clever Rayne...)
Lucky for her, she has the chance to fix the problem with the help from a small band of trigger-happy rebellions and even their leader named Nathaniel (Brendan Fletcher) takes a liking on this female warrior! But could she end the Nazi vampires?
Knowing that the movie is coming from Uwe Boll, I cautiously started seeing the movie by lowering my expectation, so low that instead of simply having no expectation, I had expected for the worst. And probably due that manner I could find myself enjoying the movie. Indeed, the story is very linear and simple, you kill, you got screwed, and you kill some more, the end. Although the overall acting of all cast is a mixed bag but you have to give credits for Natassia Malthe who has taken the movie to another level by performing all out!
It is wise to treat this movie as a straight brainless B-movie with all the cheesiness and simplicity but the writers does not forget to imbue a heavy dose of exploitation matters. Practically a straight hate-it-or-love-it type of thing but if the materials presented is your cup of tea, then you'll be delighted to know that Bloodrayne: The Third Reich is all about nudity and blood and fighting scenes, which is practically what the game is all about in the first place anyway (with the exception of nudity). Yep, the nudity is gratuitous actually with so many naked actresses roaming the Nazi occupied territories in Europe including the beatiful Natassia Malthe who strips her clothes in several scenes and bare it all, it's a rare thing to do for a lead actress! But..
But, what delights me the most is the decision to equip Rayne with two blades! It means fun slashing times, and though the CGI blood-spraying scenes are definite fake but the combination of camerawork and editing makes the action/battle sequences become fun, of course there are also bullet-spraying scenes but they are marginalized. And at one point the movie even becomes gory with the intestines coming out.
The point is, though you won't say this movie as the best ever, this is also not the worst ever and also not the worst coming from Uwe Boll. But then again, like I said before, probably because I expect for the worst and I used to play BloodRayne PC game (Bloodrayne movie series are based on Video Game), I could enjoy seeing the movie and don't mind pressing the pause button if you want to do something else, the storyline is just an excuse to put a vengeance-drive hot vampire to slash some Nazis.
> What about Nazi Zombies folks: Dead Snow (2009) and the cheapo zombo Zombie Lake (1981).
