Hhmmm... Bring It On! Back in 2000, it mesmerized me to see the girls (Kirsten Dunst, Eliza Dushku, Gabrielle Union) doing incredible acrobatic moves being accompanied by such uplifting and upbeat music with equally amusing end credits. I'm a guy, and I was proud to have waited alone in line to buy the ticket and to have seen the film! Even though back then I couldn't give an excuse to my friends that I had watched Bring It On to review it! Anyhow, being an unexpected major success, the first Bring It On was a big jump for cheerleading films and was surefire to spawn a sequel. Bring It On Again is known as the sequel, a direct-to-video one, although being having nothing to do with the first movie except for the title and the opening song, it would be a misleading rumor. And this review will tell you that it's also misleading in several other important facets.
Bring It On Again storyline centers on the life of a freshman in California State College, Whittier Smith (Anne Judson-Yager). An energetic girl who is very good at dancing and cheerleading. Whittier and her roommate Monica (Faune Chambers) are eventually accepted as the new girls in the varsity cheerleading team led by the ambitious and egocentric head cheerleader Tina Hammersmith (Bree Turner). Whittier even has a romantic relationship with the campus' DJ, Derek (Richard Lee Jackson). But Whittier will soon learn that being very skilled and personally mentored by Tina means that she must adopt new perspective in life, most notably to be as snobbish as Tina and her friends. Being a good girl Whittier is, she decides to make her own cheerleading squad to compete against the Varsity team. And so she enlists the help of some unlikely students and begins the training. Could Whittier eventually outdance and outcheer the varsity team?
To be directly speaking, this sequel misleads in many ways! It employs near zero vibe of the original. The soundtrack selection is not as upbeat as the first one, the chemistry between Whittier and Derek is as awkward as seeing princess snow white riding a bike, although the performance of the entire cast is definitely not wooden, they're good enough for direct to video film. But the major bummer of all is, and this is quite amazing, is how the cast and the script as well, manage every time to ruin the intended jokes and romantic moments! I truly stunned at how the punch-line of every jokes simply fail to deliver the blow (how did they do that? my my my). I only giggle for one time only that only lasts for a short moment, and this is as generous as I could give. Even the audition vomiting scene is not that shocking. Sigh...
The only good parts of this movie are just the dance scenes with most notably the final showdown which last only for about 7 minutes and the hip audition scene of Monica. The routine are of course far from being bad, but they are also very apart in terms of quality from the first Bring It On (2000). It doesn't take much to please me when it comes to Musical film, which I guess those who likes hearing music would more or less feel the same as I do, but this movie remarkably manage to even made me feel bad for its awful execution. Besides as cute as the actresses are, Anne Judson-Yager was 24 yo, Faune A. Chambers was 28 yo, Bree Turner was 27 yo, and Richard Lee Jackson was 25 yo, quite different with the then-18-yo Kirsten Dunst and 19-yo Eliza Dushku. Probably for a teenage movie, sometimes we need real teenage actresses. Something awkward that reminded me of John Tucker Must Die (2006).
This movie is very UN-entertaining and Unbelievably corny that the only reason why you would want to own is to give it to your annoying future ex-girlfriend or just simply give it to your annoying boyfriend. Female moviegoers, do please skip it. The people behind this movie seem didn't know what's attractive and what's not. Bring It On Again shows the world that a sequel, once again, Bring it 'off'.
