There's a saying that goes "Nothing beats a woman who purrs..." Well, I surely couldn't argue with that. But after seeing catwoman, boy oh boy, women should never purr again, at least not in a cat suit.
Released by DC Comics as one of its cash cow, Catwoman was available to watch on theater starting from July 23rd 2004 in United States, I was pretty much sure this superhero movie was released to also compete with DC Comic's main competitor, Marvel Comics. Why is that you ask? Because the filmmakers have completely altered the history and the name of the original Catwoman plus they also given the budget for as much as $100 million.
Marvel on the other hand, for the past few years, has released some high-profile and greatly entertaining movies such as Blade, X-Men, Spider-man, Daredevil, The Punisher, and the fantastic Spider-man 2 that was released just a couple of weeks ago in June. While DC has only released Road to Perdition (2002) and The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (2003). Moreover DC has a bad track record for having released the weird and "funny" Batman & Robin in 1997. I'll say, that Catwoman has a big responsibility to bear.
Now Catwoman alter ego is no longer Selina Kyle who is the love interest of Batman. She is Patience Phillips (Halle Berry), an ordinary girl who works as a designer with meek and "tame" personality. On one night, Patience overhears a devilish secret of the company she's working at about the new cosmetic product which the company is planning to launch. Knowing that someone is overhearing their secret, the security is instructed to kill Patience. Patience however, who is supposed to be dead for sure, is resurrected by a cat. Thus giving Patience a second chance in her life, and not just a chance but also superhuman capabilities with all of her senses is heightened. And now as a Catwoman, Patience is now wild, brave and is going to seek justice with her new superpowers.
Everything in a superhero movie always points put to the character, so he/she is very important. In this case, Halle Berry's Catwoman is drop-dead.... Weird! Yup, one weird cat, with its overdone make-up and skimpy outfit that cause major turn-offs in every sense. Those guys who think they are in for a treat, you're in the wrong place for sure. However, Halle Berry's acting as Patience Phillips is actually very nice and solid, but after becoming Catwoman, tee hee, sorry to say downright laughable... With her unconvincing meow and everything, ouch..., that cat scratch too hard... :-)
But the good thing is, the action scenes are cool with her capoiera fighting style kicking some bad guys’ asses, are very welcomed. Sharon Stone who's carrying the charm of Basic Instinct (1992) style is not that bad either. Benjamin Bratt could also live up his sympathetic cop character. The special effects also left something to be desired, but that too are still okay.
Well there you go fellow moviegoers, die-hard fans of Catwoman would surely disappointed. But for freshmen, you could simply enjoy this mindless fun chick-kitty-flick, as long as you don't get your hopes too high, that is...
