Harry Potter and Transformers, Transformers and Harry Potter, those titles are the only hot items in Indonesian Cinemas nowadays. They are such big buzz that some of movie theaters in Jakarta only screen those two even though each movie theater has 5 to 8 studios. Man! I honestly almost bored to sleep seeing Herri Poteng and Transkomeng posters all over this city! This Saturday Nite, I opted to just rummage DVD shelves. After reviewing The Last Airbender (2010) this afternoon, I got myself this little title which seemingly would go unknown, Circle of Fury.

Okay, so the story is a classic plot about a war veteran who came home to the States with a lot of troubles to face. Johnny (Randy Spence) is a good guy who lives alone and has to face the harsh fact of unemployment and the imminent threats of having to live on the street. While wondering aimlessly in the neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York, Johnny helps a girl named Wanda (Anatoli Grek) whose bag got snatched, but their acquaintance got interrupted when Johnny's old friend, Tariq (Adonis Williams), calls for him. At first Johnny doesn't know why Wanda is so afraid of Tariq.

Anyhow, after reminiscing about the past, Tariq gives Johnny a job to manage his new and small gym, but apparently the gym is only a cover-up for Tariq's drug-dealing business and Johnny is treated like trash by Tariq and his gang. The smooth talking Tariq even tricks Johnny to fight for him in the ring and even to fight a agile female fighter, Augustina (Christina Rose of Death of the Dead (2011)) in Tariq's illegal fighting ring called East Coast Professional Wrestling. But due to Johnny's early winning performance, people start to come to the gym to be taught some self-defense by Johnny. However, slowly but surely Tariq's business clashes with drug-hating clean man Johnny and their friendship is really turning into a personal war.

It's easy to hate a movie like this... I don't! I really don't. The visuals and the production value really are the weakest points that would deride any potential audience from renting this Indie. Yes, I know, that with your relatively limited budget walking into a video rental, you might wanna rent other mainstream Hollywood movies instead of this Independent action film. But for those aspiring filmmakers out there, I advise you to see this movie.

Circle of Fury delivers this certain level of reality and sincerity in its story that could only be the result of real experiences maybe by the writer who had observed the situation well. The interaction between the characters, mainly between Johnny and Tariq is very believable and is not over-thought. Normal people would do that. From the action side, the fighting scenes here are clearly staged but due to low production value, the fights look more raw just like the "mini" version of UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship). The truth is I don't feel bored thanks to my considerably low-expectation but also because the drama is quite engaging. You can feel how difficult the position of Johnny is in and that character is played very well by Randy Spence. The credit also goes to Christina Rose with her spicy fighting style, Anatoli Grek who appears natural and Adonis Williams though only one-dimensional but looks convincing.
